Blending design elements from the past with a modern twist, Auburn Studio transformed this Trichy, India family home into a sanctuary amid the bustling city
Set in the heart of Trichy, India, Anura is a thoughtfully curated renovation of a 40-year-old family home. Designed by The Auburn Studio under the direction of principal architect Sushmitha Ramesh, the 7,500 sq ft residence reflects a deeply personal mandate: to modernise the space without losing the emotional imprint of the family’s memories together. The result is a home that feels composed rather than constructed, allowing each modern element to create a new chapter in the Trichy, India, sanctuary.
As guests enter the home, they encounter a tranquil koi pond that leads into the foyer. Here, a sculptural fabric pendant by Oorjaa hovers overhead, diffusing light across textured walls and marble flooring. Nearby, a live-edge console table from Prakrit introduces an organic element to the space, its natural grain softened by a combination of vases and an artwork from Rare Lily. The shift from stone to oak flooring along the adjoining corridor is a deliberate celebration of materiality, welcoming the guests deeper into the home while establishing a celebration of all things tactile.

The foyer then opens into the formal living room, where the home’s past chapters are gently reintroduced through restored wooden jali screens. These elements act as porous partitions, filtering natural light and framing views of the city while lending the space a sense of continuity with its original design. Behind the screens, curved cement wall panels by Nuance Studio add a dynamic rhythm to the feature wall. The furnishings here are custom-made and intentionally restrained, including low, generous seating upholstered in soft, earthy textiles atop a Jaipur Rugs carpet, while decor accents from Rare Lily allow texture and craftsmanship to take precedence in the inviting space.

Moving onto the next area, the dining room adopts a more grounded, intimate character. At its centre, a sculptural wooden dining table from Prakrit, Auroville anchors the entertaining area, its carved legs subtly echoing the artisanal quality seen in other pieces throughout the home. Surrounding chairs maintain a cohesive silhouette, while a Jaipur Rugs carpet underfoot adds a touch of softness to the composition. The focal point in this room is the carved sandstone mural, an intricate stone etching that recalls temple reliefs, adding both visual intrigue and cultural resonance to the Trichy, India home.

At the heart of the house, the double-height atrium draws one’s eye upwards. This volume, both dramatic and inviting, is anchored by a custom-made sofa arrangement. A table from Prakrit, Auroville and ceramic pots from Beruru lend the space a grounded quality, reflecting the homeowners’ appreciation for natural materials and playful silhouettes. Above, a wood-and-fabric pendant by Oorjaa draws the eye towards the warm wooden ceiling, while wall panelling by Nuance Studio and Nexion floor tiles create a deep sense of integration with the home’s atrium.
Adjacent to this, the dining area transitions seamlessly into the kitchen, where functionality is tempered by discretion. Storage is concealed behind clean-lined cabinetry, with hidden doors leading to service areas. Beyond, the other kitchen opens out to views of the backyard, allowing even the most utilitarian spaces to remain connected to the home’s emphasis on natural light and verdant landscape.

Moving into the more private quarters of the home, Auburn Studio wanted to emphasise the power of quiet layering. In the master suite, the experience is deliberately choreographed. First, a relaxed sitting area forms the first threshold, furnished with soft textiles and anchored by a Rug Republic carpet. A Fig Light table lamp creates ambient lighting for the soothing space.
This vignette then gives way to the sleeping area, where a custom-made bed and headboard are dressed in muted, soft tones from Shades Furnishings. Matching side tables add symmetry to the space, while a Jaipur Rugs carpet underfoot adds softness and depth. Altogether, the room creates a pocket of peace amidst the bustling city of Trichy, India, allowing the homeowners to unwind after a long day.
Altogether, the Anura home lives up to its name, creating a space that follows, adapts, and endures the unrelenting tides of time. Each piece is chosen for its ability to age gracefully alongside the homeowners, setting the stage for more memorable experiences and poignant reflections as the years go on.
