Working on this three-storey residence in Bukit Timah was a dream come true for E&A Interiors founder Chlöe Elkerton. The designer was tasked to put together an elegant yet comfortable abode that incorporated its Australian owners’ personal collection of Aboriginal art pieces.
Drawing on her extensive experience with upholstery textiles, Elkerton accentuated the clients’ collection of artworks by Polly Ngale with complementary furnishings and finishes, creating a layered look for the abode. This 5,000sqft home also features Asian elements and vintage pieces throughout. “Bold and beautiful fabric choices, and playing with different scales and patterns deliver a unique edge to this home,” she says.

The design firm turned to one of the family’s largest artworks as the focal point of the living room. The painting’s cerulean hues pop against the golden grasscloth wall and echo the blue tones of the pool directly opposite. “Being (near) the main entrance to the house, it was important to create an impact,” says Elkerton.
A neutral colour scheme of sandy hues highlights the sprinkling of blue and green tones, and circular and triangular motifs used here, which are often found in Aboriginal art. Clean-lined Holly Hunt chairs in tan leather add a dose of modernity, and bronze-hued lighting fixtures by Vaughan Designs give the space a subtle Asian flavour.

Just outdoors, the pool area is a sanctuary for relaxation that flows seamlessly from the living room. Thai rain drums and a rich variety of shapes and patterns inspired by tribal textiles and art lend visual interest, while materials such as teakwood, leather, linen and dry silk imbue this space with textural depth.

In contrast to the statement-making living areas are the relaxing bedrooms. Fabrics with botanical and marine prints star against a soft palette of blues and off-white tones for a clean, serene look. Azure grasscloth brings the walls of the master bedroom to life, with hand-embroidered textiles, vintage pieces and bone-inlay furniture elevating this handsome space.
The guest bedroom’s colour scheme was kept simple to capitalise on its abundance of natural light; earthy tones and subtle textures enhance this feature. Asian-inspired botanical touches create a calming feel in this room, which doubles as a secondary study.
