Taking inspiration from the hillside home’s Japanese roots, House of Rolison created a family sanctuary in the Bel Air neighbourhood of Los Angeles

The most cinematic homes unfold slowly. Such was the case in this Bel Air hillside home, which was first canopied by trees when the House of Rolison first arrived at the Los Angeles home. But as they settled, they started to catch glimpses of the ocean. “That quiet reveal is the magic of the site,” Taylor Hahn recalled. “You almost can’t tell it's the ocean until you really look. Then you can’t unsee it.”

House of Rolison was inspired by the original owners’ Japanese heritage, which resulted in a Zen-like sanctuary that prioritised views of the changing tides. The team remained committed to honouring the founders’ spirit whilst expanding the house for contemporary living. “Too far one way and it's sleepy,” Hahn said. “Too far the other way and it’s shouting. Living in that tension is where the whole design happened.”

From the beginning, the team emphasised holistic wellness throughout the Los Angeles property. They used non-toxic materials such as tumbled limestone, natural clay and marble to emphasise more neutral, grounded tones. Thoughtful details like built-in benches, a sauna and nooks for meditative reading experiences became key elements of their approach. “The parts we’re proudest of are the quiet ones,” the designers reflected. “Design people always notice the big gestures, but the people who live here end up loving the corners.”

What sets this Los Angeles home apart is that it occupies a single level, which is practically unheard of, as neighbouring homes require their occupants to climb between floors. Here, there is an uninterrupted flow between the different spaces.

At the heart of the abode is the kitchen, anchored by a thirteen-foot island made of hand-chiselled stone with a Zia tile-wrapped hood and an angular Larose Guyon Fulton light hanging above. For ease of entertaining, ZLine appliances line the kitchen.

In the great room, developed in collaboration with Arhaus, the furniture settles seamlessly into the space, with a round sofa giving the room a playful quality. Nearby, there is a giant multi-slide door system that dissolves the boundary between the great room and the outdoor kitchen and terrace. Outdoors, TimberTech patio and exterior decking, Lutron controls and Baldwin and Emtek hardware create a luxurious living experience with ease.

Among all of the rooms in the Los Angeles sanctuary, the media room was House of Rolison’s favourite to put together. Timeline's Fluted Scallop solid wood panelling now wraps the wall in beautiful vertical movement and shadow, concealing behind it a hundred-inch television, a laundry room and a powder room. The amber mirror walls elsewhere in the house bring warmth and quiet glamour to the space, creating deliberate contrast with the rawer textures of stone and clay plaster.

The bathrooms are finished with Watermark fixtures throughout that have become pieces of jewellery in their own right. Bocci lighting appears throughout the house, with notable pieces like the ribbon lights in the black bathroom. The Vast Studio metallic tub is another memorable feature that anchors the primary bathroom.

Beyond the homeowners’ spaces, the guest house carries a masculine energy. With the cabinets flowing seamlessly into the walls, the room is infinitely customisable and creates a protective atmosphere for unwinding after a long day.

The Los Angeles home also features art curated by Studio CT, with photography by Jim Marshall, ceramic sculpture by April Johnson and works sourced through Casterline Goodman among them. Meanwhile, Olive Ateliers assisted by staging and layering in old-world pieces that speak to the house’s founding instinct. Additionally, Bang & Olufsen media equipment extends the house’s commitment to high-quality pieces that create a sensory symphony on every level.
