Explore how interior designer Amrita Thomas balances coastal elegance with playful charm in this expansive Chennai, India home

On the shores of Chennai, with a view of the Bay of Bengal stretching endlessly toward the horizon, stands Kora Home. Designed by Amrita Thomas with the help of Chitale & Son, this 8,000-square-foot oceanfront retreat redefines coastal luxury through the lens of conscious design. Named after the Sanskrit word for purity and untouched beauty, this residence embodies a philosophy where sustainability meets sophistication, and indigenous craftsmanship takes centre stage.

The sprawling home features a pavilion-style layout that frames the sea as the undisputed protagonist of every space. Generous panes of glass wrap the structure, transforming the ever-changing Bay of Bengal into a living artwork that fills the room with breathtaking colour and sound. This connection to the ocean became the foundational principle for every subsequent design decision.

Interior designer Amrita Thomas of Alara Studio approached the project with what she terms “luxury slow and sustainable”, a philosophy that elevates comfort without excess while championing Indian craftsmanship and conscious material choices. The result is a space where wabi-sabi restraint meets tactile, dynamic luxury for the homeowners.

The heart of Kora Home lies in its unprecedented collaboration with over twenty exceptional Indian designers and makers, each contributing their unique craft and sensibility to create a harmonious whole. From emerging artisans to master furniture makers, the project demonstrates how conscious design can support local creative communities while achieving international standards of excellence.

The main living areas unfold as a continuous volume, where subtle lighting changes create distinct atmospheres within the open plan. A sculptural cane ‘sea-anemone’ installation by Wicker Story x Room Therapy Collective anchors the living space, its organic forms echoing the marine environment beyond the windows. The terrazzo bar area glows with asymmetrical lighting by Shailesh Rajput Studio, conceived as a wall-mounted artwork that transforms a functional corner into a conversation piece.

Every surface tells a story of place and process. Walls throughout the home are finished in lime plaster, which invites the salt air to create natural patina over time. This ensures the house can age gracefully with its coastal environment. Live-edge marble and wood tables lend tactile beachside character, while kilims, off-white upholstery and custom artwork echo the sea’s shifting palette of blues, greys and sandy neutrals.

The dining space receives ethereal definition through Oorja’s jellyfish-like pendant lights, suspended sculptures that catch and refract the ocean light streaming through the windows. This careful attention to lighting design extends throughout the home, where fixtures serve as both functional elements and artistic focal points.

The private quarters embrace a more intimate scale, while still maintaining the home’s connection to nature. Bedrooms are designed to feel both rustic and serene all at once, layered in blues and greens that reflect the coastal environment.

Cane and rattan pieces provide textural interest throughout the room, adding a sense of the organic to the aquatic-leaning space. Meanwhile, oriental elements from the client’s personal collection add quiet sophistication without overwhelming the spaces’ essential tranquillity.

The family room breaks from the oceanic palette with sun-warmed mustards and earthy tones, creating a bohemian sanctuary anchored by a sculptural cane table that demonstrates the versatility of traditional Indian materials in contemporary settings.

The outdoor space continues the home’s commitment to material honesty and coastal integration. The deck and pool area extend the lime-plaster treatment, creating visual continuity that allows the architecture to dissolve into the landscape. This seamless indoor-outdoor relationship places light, salt air and the waves at the forefront, enhancing the architectural experience.

Kora Home challenges conventional notions of luxury through its commitment to sustainable practices. Many existing pieces were reupholstered rather than replaced, while every new element was sourced from independent Indian designers. Woods and textiles were ethically sourced, and partnerships with small-batch makers ensured that each piece carries both environmental consciousness and cultural authenticity.

This oceanfront retreat stands as proof that true luxury can be slow, rooted and deeply human. In honouring both place and process, Kora Home creates a new paradigm for coastal living: one where conscious choices enhance the experience of dwelling beside the sea, turning it into a backdrop for a lifetime of memories.
