Tasked with creating a home no one had ever seen before, Spaces Architects @KA created an innovative New Delhi space that infuses honest materiality with playful, brutalist elegance

With the relentless demands of modern living, many desire homes that follow a neutral, traditional design story. But for the Art House in New Delhi, India, Spaces Architects @KA was tasked with a revolutionary approach: “to create something which no one has ever seen before.”

Their client was a well-travelled, expressive individual who deeply valued innovative experiences, pushing the team to create an unconventional, thoughtfully curated home.

From the outset, guests can enter a semi-transparent gate, catching glimpses of the sculpted surfaces that house this New Delhi abode. Seen from the street, the home invites curiosity with its curvilinear forms and panels that diverge from the rectangular spaces down the street. “Curves are fluid and unpredictable, much like the house itself,” the team mused. “Unlike straight lines, they gave us the freedom to shape spaces more naturally and explore more creative possibilities.”

Stepping into the main entrance, the circular staircase draws the eye upward to a double-height living room, which stands at the heart of the home. Natural light filters through the space, while a cohesive blend of stone inlays underfoot with digital artwork creates a dialogue between material permanence and technological trends. The nearby dining room creates an expansive gathering space connected to the kitchen.

Moving further inside, the family lounge opens to an outdoor terrace through large sliding doors. This represents the most relaxed zone in the New Delhi, India house, creating a seamless connection between the family’s daily activities and verdant scenes of nature. At the same time, the material-forward approach can create a moody atmosphere, where the shadows highlight the organic features found in details like the nearby shelving, undulating coffee table and playful patterns on the walls.

Stepping down into the basement level of the New Delhi, India, home, one is immersed in a more monochromatic palette. There are minimal visual distractions, ensuring that all who enter are immersed in the architectural elements of the jacuzzi, which has a tensile fabric installation hanging above it.

Moving into the more private areas of the home, whimsical pops of colour start to reveal themselves. A soothing blue hue takes centre stage in the hallway artwork, carrying through into the gemstone perched over the bed. An abstract mural of a mother holding her child fills the room with a sense of undeniable comfort, its distinct lines echoed in the colourful bathroom ceiling.

In designing such an innovative home, Spaces Architects @KA underwent a series of explorations with the different materials and depths at which to place them. The direct, physical engagement with the materials and construction produced a layer of craftsmanship that reinforces the uniqueness of the spaces it generated.

The material palette throughout is restrained to maintain the home’s unique architectural story, with warm whites, muted beiges and soft greys contrasting with the vibrant artworks in the space. Art was no afterthought in this New Delhi, India project; it became quite literally embedded within the walls of each space, whether through recessed niches, textured backdrops or framed compositions. “In some areas, materials like stone and plaster are shaped to merge with digital or physical artwork, creating a seamless transition between art and built form,” shared the team.

Altogether, the home reveals itself in layers, creating pockets of meaningful reflection at every turn. Spaces Architects @KA created a novelty of Indian architecture with the idea that wonder and curiosity would be daily companions throughout the space, all while ensuring it was functional for a family to thrive in.
