Blending old-world charm with contemporary flair, Studio Vero has created a London home that celebrates modern art and vivid colour stories for an unforgettable space

In creating this pied-à-terre for a client who already owns two other European properties, Studio Vero sought to design a home with genuine character and a distinct sense of place. The London-based practice, founded by Romanos Brihi and Venetia Rudebeck, was given this precise brief for a 1,700-square-foot lateral apartment at Chelsea Barracks in Belgravia.

The practice turned instinctively to the artisans and suppliers of the Pimlico Road. “Each interior is carefully composed to reflect the client’s personality, the architecture of the space and the rhythms of daily life,” Rudebeck shared.

Upon entering the London apartment, the entrance hall establishes a meditative, art-filled atmosphere. This space is anchored by a large canvas by British artist Lee Johnson, infusing the tranquil Belgravia home with its bold and vivid strokes. Nearby stands a Robert Bevan antiqued mirror in a patinated brass frame, while a bespoke bench upholstered in George Spencer velvet offers welcoming warmth. Underfoot is an antique rug in earth-red hues.

Beyond the hallway, the open-plan kitchen, living and dining area stands in calm contrast with the entryway. The kitchen sets a composed scene with its timber cabinetry, sculptural stone island and antique-brass-shade pendant lamps, while Rose Uniacke’s aged-bronze-and-leather bar stools add depth to the space’s neutral tones.

Off-white walls are punctuated by a duo of side tables in dark olive and red by Peter Mikic for The Lacquer Company, which converse with a richly coloured abstract artwork by Rosa Roberts. Floor-to-ceiling windows are softened by full-length curtains in Rose Uniacke Coconut Linen, the fabric’s warmth mediating between the interior’s carefully considered palette and the shifting seasonal light of London outside the home’s confines.

Moving onto the living room, the apartment’s layering of modern and antique craftsmanship finds its fullest expression. A large off-white sectional sofa from Flexform adds spatial definition, while a low oval coffee table in ebonised oak by Rose Uniacke juxtaposes with it seamlessly. A Sinclair Till silk and wool rug complements a sculptural mid-century chair in velvet from Portuondo Gallery.

Above the marble mantelpiece, which was sourced from Jamb and now marks the room’s central focal point, stands a screenprint by John Hoyland from 8 Holland Street. To complete the earth-toned vignette, another notable piece in the room is an Italian mid-century floor lamp.

When asked which room was the most ambitious to put together, Studio Vero gestures towards the dining area. Custom-made English oak joinery, designed by the studio to line the back wall, channels Art Deco elegance through a contemporary sensibility.

The light honey-gold tones maintain an inviting gesture, with a painting by Christian Fedyk flanked on either side by bookcases. The contents of these shelves are the result of a collaboration with Ultimate Library’s founder Philip Blackwell, who worked with Brihi and Rudebeck to curate a collection based on Nobel Prize-winning authors in literature.

At the room’s centre stands a large single-piece oak dining table, designed in collaboration with a British artisan and surrounded by eight antique caned-back dining chairs and illuminated by an Urban Electric pendant. A painting by London artist Leila Bartwell occupies the wall to the right, a work by a close friend of the studio.

Moving into the more private areas of the London apartment, the master suite creates a serene cocoon from the bustling city. Immediately, one notices how the textured matt silk wallcovering from Stereo cossets the room in old-world elegance. On the bed, one can find a Studio Vero custom-designed panelled headboard upholstered in Soie De Lune fabric. Nearby are bedside tables from Soane Britain that hold antique silver table lamps from Collier Webb.

In one corner, a reimagined mid-century armchair and footstool by Dagmar provide a soothing spot for reading sessions, especially now that it is paired with a hand-carved side table acquired during the client's travels. To maintain quiet comfort, an alabaster pendant and floor lamp, both from Collier Webb, provide an ambient glow. The soothing sensory vignette is completed with a Peter Page rug underfoot, which adds subtle interest to the herringbone wooden floor.

For the guest bedroom, Studio Vero wanted to unleash a more exuberant, creative design story. The room is wrapped in the botanical grandeur of Mia Reay’s Besler Iris wallpaper, while Paolo Moschino's pendant light with hand-cut petals in coco shell hangs above.

The headboard was upholstered in Soane Britain's zigzag indigo pattern, maintaining its considered scale while ensuring the twin bed arrangement stays flexible. A deep blue bedside table from The Lacquer Company grounds the composition, while Robert Kime's hand-dyed Ikat peacock black cushions with handmade tassels complete the richly-hued, unforgettable room.

“For us, this project was about creating an authentic London home tailored to our client's discerning taste and style,” Rudebeck shared. “So much of the design focused on British talent, which was such a joy to bring together and create an interior that feels uplifting and memorable.”
