Cover Furnishings from Walter Knoll, an Italian brand carried at Royal Interiors

Royal Interiors charts a new chapter with a showroom concept that displays furnishings from leading European brands

It took a fateful trip to Italy to cement Suresh Nandwani’s decision to kickstart his journey into furniture retail. The founder of Royal Interiors had visited the famed Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan, and instantly fell in love with the collections that were on show; he saw an opportunity to introduce European brands to Singapore, which were then still lesser known in the local market.

The enterprising founder, who is also the third-generation successor to luxury upholstery textile business Royal Fabrics, took the chance to provide furnishing and interior design services to existing customers of the family business from 2009 to 2013. Another milestone was achieved in 2014 when the entrepreneur opened the brand’s first Royal Interiors showroom at Tan Boon Liat Building.

Since then, the business has grown from strength to strength. In April 2021, it opened a street-facing showroom, thus expanding its total footprint in the building to 21,000sqft, spread across four levels. Here, Nandwani tells us more about the next steps for the company and the notable brands in its portfolio.

What are some of key brands carried by Royal Interiors?
Suresh Nandwani (SN) Our brands complement one another and epitomise luxury high-end furniture with their own unique characteristics. Walter Knoll, our most comprehensive high-end brand, (covers everything) from upholstery to office furniture and carpets. Any residence, office, commercial or hospitality property can be fully furnished with Walter Knoll products. For over 150 years, the brand has been modern and timeless simultaneously.

Fiam Italia is another notable brand we carry; it’s one of the few companies in the industry to specialise in curved glass furniture. Founded in 1973, it has developed collections with some of the greatest designers of our time, such as Philippe Starck and Marcel Wanders. Everyone who discovers the brand’s work for the first time is amazed by the beauty of the curves it can achieve only with glass.

We also highlight collections from Italian manufacturer Riva 1920. Riva 1920 is a true master of woodwork; since its founding in 1920, the firm has been guided by tradition and the respect of wood as a natural material. Its most precious material, Kauri, is a 50,000-year-old wood variety that is found underground in New Zealand.

And lastly, Lenzi Home, which is our latest brand, specialises in marble. It has produced marble tables and accessories for more than 50 years, and recently launched a home collection incorporating sofas and coffee tables. Lenzi Home also manufactures beautiful dining tables featuring a wide selection of marble varieties; the price point is also one of the brand’s strengths.

Which are your bestsellers?
SN Our best-selling products are the Walter Knoll armchairs, Fiam Italia mirrors, Riva 1920 benches and stools, and Lenzi Home marble dining tables.

Tell us more about your new showroom.
SN The new space we launched in April 2021 at Tan Boon Liat Building is a new concept for us. It is much more retail-oriented as we want to widen our customer base by offering a designer brand for every budget; these include brands such as Kartell. Yet we did not compromise on the beauty of the showroom; it features beautiful glass panels and double-height ceilings. Our aim is to inspire our visitors and offer them a new experience with home furniture and decor.

What are your plans for the future?
SN We hope to continue expanding our showroom within and outside Tan Boon Liat Building. Over the years, we have built a comprehensive portfolio of brands, and each of them deserves to be available in different locations in Singapore.
