We pick out stylish finds inspired by International Klein Blue, French artist Yves Klein’s signature ultramarine hue

Having a moment in current home decor trends, the dynamic statement International Klein Blue (IKB for short) colour is taking off in the latest collections today. Fondly loved in both the realms of art and design, this significant hue of choice has a long-running history charting back to the days of its inception by French experimental artist and a visionary of the Nouveau Réalisme art movement, Yves Klein.

Fascinated by the specific shade of blue, Klein first started incorporating the mood-stirring pigment into his recognisable series of around 200 monochrome paintings; interpreted as a way of defying the conventions of representation/likeness in art, a common trend of the time back in the early ’50s. Instead, embracing the alternative of immateriality and limitless interpretations that art can be perceived. Having this penchant for the colour he named International Klein Blue, the artist went on to officially trademark it in 1957 and further explored the colour in the ’60s, through impressionist nude paintings of women and sculptural works.

Exactly sixty years since Klein’s passing, it seems as though the transcendent deep shade of cobalt has become a source of inspiration among creative maestros. The ultra stunning blue-as-blue shade has even seen its longevity intertwine with fashion (think: Celine Fall/Winter 2017) and several design disciplines, which count interior and furniture design.
