Zhang Chunlei's upcoming exhibition at Gallery 1819

Gallery 1819 presents the works of renowned contemporary artist Zhang Chunlei for the gallery's first exhibition of 2024

This coming January, Gallery 1819 is dedicating its space to esteemed contemporary artist Zhang Chunlei’s newest exhibition, titled Heritage. Marking Zhang’s second solo exhibition to date and Gallery 1819’s very first exhibition of the year, Heritage will highlight the artist’s creative approach to traditional art forms and his skilful blending of classic cultural influences with contemporary forms and materials.

The exhibition will furthermore delve into the artist’s distinctive vision and creative process, promising an immersive and inspiring visit for collectors, art enthusiasts and artists alike.

Zhang Chunlei’s work is in many ways borne of his own heritage, inspiring his exploration of Chinese culture and traditions as the foundation for his art. An unconventional reinterpretation of Chinese calligraphy can be uncovered in his works, imbuing the collection with the traditional values and philosophy encapsulated in the calligraphy, alongside modern materials and the artist’s own, contemporary sensibilities.

This singular approach results in vibrant, striking works that evoke heartfelt cherishing of long-standing practices and art forms, yet equally resonate in the 21st century.

Even before embarking on his journey towards these remarkable works, Zhang had already made a name for himself, his evocative painting Art Stages Pasar 2020 receiving the UOB Painting of the Year Award in the Established Artist Category.

Zhang’s devotion—to the traditions of his culture, to experimentation and to curiosity—thus culminates in this boundary-pushing exhibition, which will open on January 4 and run until January 30 at Gallery 1819, from 11 am to 7 pm daily.

What’s also worth noting is that the Heritage exhibition will be a part of the highly anticipated Singapore Art Week 2024, which stands to inject the city with immersive dialogues, diverse showcases and other energising art events from January 19 to 28 2024.
