Villeroy & Boch produces exemplary bathroom fittings that set new standards for beauty and performance—the storied brand celebrates its 275th anniversary this year

“Great things have small beginnings”, said English explorer Sir Francis Drake. This declaration rings especially true given Villeroy & Boch’s humble origins as a small family-run ceramics company.

Since its founding in 1748, Villeroy & Boch has produced impeccable bathroom fixtures as well as elegant porcelain that epitomise quality, tradition and innovation. This year, the company celebrates its 275th anniversary, delighting in the ways that it has helped homeowners enjoy the special moments in life with its fine products.

French roots

The storied brand was started by iron founder Francois Boch and his three sons in the village of Audun-le-Tiche in Lorraine, France. Not long after its inception, Boch opened a factory in Septfontaines in Luxembourg to cater to his fledgling firm’s exponential growth. The factory became the first large-scale manufacturer in the country, heralding the beginnings of industrial mass production.

In 1809, the company moved to its present-day headquarters in Mettlach, Germany, turning an old abbey into a highly mechanised tableware production outfit. Buoyed
by groundbreaking innovations such as a new furnace system as well as the development of an extremely durable earthenware material that was cheaper than porcelain, further expansion was inevitable. The firm announced a merger with businessman Nicolas Villeroy in 1836, thereby establishing itself as one of the first global players of the 19th century.

Over 200 years since its founding, Villeroy & Boch has constantly reinvented itself by creating new techniques and material formulations, and through introducing new colours and shapes. At the same time, ceramic remains at the core of its business. Today, Villeroy & Boch offers a wide range of luxurious ceramic items that elevate the everyday.

The brand is especially known for revolutionary offerings that transform bathrooms into sanctuaries for relaxation. Take the Theano freestanding bathtub for instance, which boasts a sleek design with rounded edges.
