The Pasig River esplanade is now ready to become a hub of commercial activity and leisurely strolls

President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos inaugurated on June 23 the second phase of the Pasig River Rehabilitation project led by the Inter-agency Council for the Pasig River Urban Development (IAC-PRUD) and the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) at the site of Phase 1C near Plaza Mexico.

“We all know that the Pasig River is one of the most important waterways of commerce and trade back in the day. Over the years, it has been neglected greatly, and we are trying to breathe life into it once again,” says Romando Artes, MMDA Chairman and Co-chairman of the Inter-agency Council.

From the initial showcase area that we visited in January, the esplanade now reaches Plaza Mexico, a historical square that houses the IV Centenary of the Mexico–Philippines Maritime Expedition monument. Another 500 metres have been constructed, featuring a beautiful riverside boardwalk with fountains, Victorian-era street lampposts, and lounge spaces for visitors to lounge in. On the way there, guests witnessed the immense progress made as they strolled through the walkway, passing the commercial spaces to be occupied by small and medium-sized businesses.

Once the President and First Lady arrived at the scene, the crowd excitedly gathered around to meet him. After exchanging greetings and pleasantries, the President addressed the nation with a message reinforcing his commitment to the project. “Five months ago, when we opened the first phases of this endeavour to the public, I made a declaration—a promise—that I am fully in on this project and that the First Lady and I would also be among the foremost advocates and proponents for its completion. Our presence here shows that we are making good progress on that promise and that we are serious about ensuring that this project will reach its envisioned fruition,” shares President Marcos.
