Personal space is both a luxury and a necessity. Now more than ever, the challenges we face make it essential to carve out our own nook that assures us of privacy and comfort.

Tatler Philippines, in partnership with Alveo Land, recently hosted an engaging virtual affair with friends and colleagues to talk about redecorating and renovating our personal space. Tatler Homes Philippines editor Stephanie Zubiri led the conversation with esteemed interior designers Isabel Lozano and Ram Lopez-Vito Bucoy, and discussed the essential things to keep in mind when one is getting their hands on refurbishing their personal space.

Decorator and interior stylist Bucoy joined experienced interior designer Lozano in sharing tips on renovating or redecorating one's personal space:

It is important that your space suits your lifestyle and preferences

Lozano shared that the key element for her when working with clients is understanding their lifestyle and preferences and making their personal space a reflection of those. Knowing how you want to feel when entering your personal space is essential in choosing which style, decor, and furniture to use, even the tiniest of details like light fixtures.

Colours matter when choosing which vibe you would want to feel

Bucoy being a great supporter of eclectic and vibrant designs for homes suggest to defer from white and the so-called "greige", which is a mix of grey and beige, but rather put more colours as much as you want. He said that colour is beautiful when picked correctly and using it for your walls might even make your room space look bigger as it hides all the shadows. Layering the room with textural decor like paintings, sculpture, and other ornamentations is the best way to do with using colours for your space.

Always match your personality with your interior design

Both Bucoy and Lozano agreed that one's personal space must complement one's personality and lifestyle. It doesn't mean that what might look good on Instagram or Pinterest will suit you or your family's aesthetics as each of us are unique and distinct in taste and preferences. Bucoy shared that a good designer knows how to listen to his client and be able to grasp his or her vision, rather than following what's on trend. Lozano seconded this thought and said that each room has its ambience that connects to the soul of its owner. This energy she said is also felt by anyone who would visit your apartment or house.

Living in a condominium has its perks

Lozano shared that living in a condominium brings comfort more than anything. It is easier to maintain and you get help from the management when the need arises. It also offers security and convenience as Bucoy also said, especially if you need something to be delivered as there would be staff members who would gladly assist you with your needs. For Zubiri, she added that it also gives you a sense of belongingness in a community, like in this time of the health crisis where one would feel isolated and just stuck at home.

You have the opportunity to showcase wherever you are in your life right now through your interior design

Bucoy wrapped up his segment of the evening with some wise words that your home's design must be created piece by piece, moment by moment, reflecting who you are and how much you have accomplished in your life.

Lozano meanwhile shared that with our current situation, it is important to surround yourself with things that would bring you relief and are meaningful to you. Make the space enrich your life for your self and your family through decor and colours—things that would remind you that life is precious.

Zubiri opened the floor for questions and the guests threw some personal queries for the houses and condominium units that they are currently renovating or at least planning to. Bucoy and Lozano shared more tips for them but one thing that hyped up the conversation is having the construction staff regularly tested for COVID-19 when they are doing these projects. Everybody agreed that at this day and age, the safety of everyone involved in the project is of utmost importance.
