From October 17 to 19, Manila FAME will showcase the most artisanal, innovative products by Filipino furniture makers and fashion designers

The Filipino design scene is known for its vibrant innovations that blend Western and Eastern influences. In celebration of this unique phenomenon, Manila FAME is hosting its 72nd edition at the World Trade Center in Pasay from October 17 to 19.

Sitting at the intersection of home design and fashion inspiration, this year’s Manila FAME is centred on the theme of ‘Reimagination.’ The products on display at the fair transform raw local materials into artisanal products that celebrate Filipino ingenuity with their playful patterns and bold colours.

With over 250 exhibitors, this three-day fair will engage both new and returning visitors with new perspectives on home furnishings and fashion design.

Among its most highly-anticipated events is the Design Commune, which is spearheaded by acclaimed designers Rita Nazareno and Gabby Lichauco. Anchored on the theme ‘Beyond Reality’, the collection will display functional pieces made out of unexpected materials, from everyday objects to extinct animals and plants.

Designer Maco Custodio has also curated accessories, apparel, and footwear from fifteen local fashion companies for Design Commune Fashion. Taking inspiration from patterns and textures found in nature, these items will add tropical flair to any outfit.

Although Manila FAME celebrates breakthroughs in the design world, it also pays homage to its roots. This year, there will be a retrospective displaying iconic products from the 1980s and 1990s iterations of the trade show. Some of the items on display include the peacock chair, shell clutches, and sinamay hats.

Sustainability is another key component of Manila FAME’s identity. Their efforts to increase environmental responsibility have resulted in the development of ‘pinyapel’, a combination of the word ‘pinya’ [pineapple] and ‘papel’ [paper]. This sustainably sourced paper turns discarded pineapple leaves into home furniture items.

In support of Filipino artisans, Manila FAME is also hosting The Artisans Village to celebrate the unique talents of artisans across the country. The theme for this year is ‘Uri,’ which translates to types or categories. This year’s Artisans Village focuses on how these artisans apply traditional weaving patterns to pieces that fit seamlessly into homes and wardrobes.

Finally, Manila FAME will be hosting the 39th iteration of the KATHA Awards, which celebrates the creativity and achievements of local brands. Designers who push the boundaries of self-expression are awarded in different categories such as furniture, holidays and gifts, and fashion.

“Manila FAME 2024 is going to be both familiar and original. Returning buyers and visitors can anticipate the same warmth of Filipino hospitality,” shared CITEM Executive Director Leah Pulido Ocampo. “You can expect upgraded and new features from the show. We’re looking for new avenues for growth to help sustain our local brands and manufacturers. This upcoming edition will truly be a worthwhile experience everyone shouldn’t miss.”
