As the globally renowned design platform comes to Hong Kong this December, Tatler speaks to Philippe Delhomme, its president, executive board, to find out how it inspires designers, brands and enthusiasts alike in the region

Maison&Objet has long been a pioneering force in the global design industry, offering a platform that connects creativity with commerce. From its Parisian roots, the event has expanded internationally. Marking its debut in Hong Kong, Maison&Objet’s first edition in the SAR takes place from 5 to 7 December at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).

The event, sponsored by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA) of the Hong Kong government, features two sections titled the Maison&Objet Design Factory pavilion and Hong Kong Design on Stage Showcase.

The event is a significant milestone in the design world; it also coincides with Maison&Objet’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Here, Philippe Delhomme, Maison&Objet’s president, executive board, shares insights into the brand’s mission, its unique position in the design industry and its vision for fostering cross-cultural collaboration.

Why is it important for Maison&Objet to expand into new regions like Asia?

Asia has always been a source of inspiration for Maison&Objet due to its rich cultural heritage and forward-thinking design scene. Expanding into Asia allows us to engage directly with this dynamic market, support local talent, and create opportunities for international collaboration. By doing so, we connect regional creativity with the global design stage, fostering a mutual exchange of ideas and innovation.

Every year, many players from Asia, and particularly from mainland China and Hong Kong, visit the fair in Paris. Now we’re giving the opportunity to the whole local community to come, discover and be inspired by the Maison&Objet.

We would like to particularly thank the CCIDA, which offered us a collaboration opportunity by calling on our expertise as organisers … and Maison&Objet’s ability to unite the design community.

We aim to serve as a catalyst for innovation and collaboration in Hong Kong’s creative scene. By providing a platform that highlights both local talent and international perspectives, we hope to elevate visibility and open doors for designers and brands to grow on a global scale.

How does Maison&Objet support emerging designers and brands?

Maison&Objet supports emerging talents through dedicated initiatives such as awards, showcases, and networking opportunities. These platforms provide much-needed exposure, helping new designers and brands connect with global markets and establish their presence in the industry.

What’s the biggest takeaway you want visitors to leave with after attending Maison&Objet?

We want visitors to leave inspired and energised, having discovered new ideas, connected with innovative designers and gained insights into the future of design. Ultimately, we hope they feel part of a vibrant and inclusive global design community [and for them to] look to learn more by visiting the next Paris session of Maison&Objet, which will take place from January 16 to 20, 2025.
