Explore a masterstroke by IDIN Architects, transforming an unremarkable plot into a captivating design destination. A dark, dramatic exterior architecture shelters warm, organic interiors that naturally embrace living flora.

In contemporary hospitality design, architecture extends far beyond shelter—it communicates brand identity and crafts memorable sensory experiences. Harudot Chonburi by Nana Coffee Roasters, designed by IDIN Architects, stands out through its dramatic exterior silhouette and inviting interior atmosphere. Lacking picturesque mountain backdrop or coastal views, the project proves that ambitious architecture can create its own compelling sense of place, turning an ordinary roadside lot in Chonburi into a destination cafe.

Marking the Harudot brand’s first venture outside Bangkok, the project presented a distinct design challenge: establishing a strong destination identity without relying on surrounding natural scenery.

“Initial site visits revealed a complete lack of natural context—no ocean vistas or mountain ridges,” reflects Jeravej Hongsakul, founder and principal architect of IDIN Architects. “As the brand’s first regional outpost, failure was not an option. The architecture had to make a confident statement and transform the site into a primary destination from scratch.”

Captivating exterior, inviting interior

To establish a striking presence, the architects sculpted classic gabled forms into dynamic, wave-like volumes that curve and swell across the site. Engineered using lightweight curved steel framing clad in dark-stained pine, the dark silhouette stands out confidently against its suburban surroundings. To avoid a monolithic presence, the structure is broken into three distinct pavilions housing dedicated functions: a central coffee bar, a primary guest lounge, and a private meeting suite alongside service amenities.

Contrasting with the dark exterior, the interior wraps guests in natural pine walls and ceilings that create an inviting atmosphere. Custom seating and counters meander through the space like fluid ribbons, matching the undulating lines of the building frame. These timber ribbons adjust in height to serve different functions—at 40 centimetres they form bench seating, rising to 60 centimetres for display ledges, and reaching 80 centimetres to form coffee service counters.

While enclosed by timber walls, the interior integrates nature seamlessly. Mature trees planted inside reach upward through circular roof openings toward the sky, drawing in sunlight and coastal breezes. Where structural roof openings were not possible, Barrisol stretch-fabric lighting panels emit a soft ambient glow that mimics natural overhead light.

Enriched through details

Beyond its sculptural form, Harudot charms visitors through bespoke design details. In the semi-outdoor courtyard, custom resin-cast stools embed upcycled coffee grounds, fallen leaves, and rice grains—creating tactile surfaces that quietly tell the story of coffee and origin.

On the outdoor terrazzo paving, acrylic sakura petal inlays cluster around tree bases before gradually dispersing toward the interior entrance, mimicking falling spring blossom. Subtle graphic messages embedded within the terrazzo—such as “MAY THE COFFEE BE WITH YOU” and “HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DAY”—offer moments of delight.

Through thoughtful detailing and clear design vision, Harudot Chonburi demonstrates that architectural value is not solely dependent on pristine natural surroundings. Passionate design can create identity and beauty out of a blank canvas.

Transforming an empty plot into a compelling landmark, the cafe invites visitors to pause, savour exceptional coffee, and appreciate an interior environment crafted with care.
