S/LAB 10 and Domaine Architects discuss what good design means to them and how this is reflected in their work

Design is the process of creating solutions, and good design is when that solution creates functional, aesthetically pleasing, and effective solutions. What constitutes good design is something that preoccupies architects daily—whether it’s imagining a building from the ground up or designing that most intimate of structures, a home.

Domaine Architects, founded by husband and wife team Masyerin Mohamad Nor and Norashidah Wahab, are behind some of the city’s most distinctive and sustainable buildings. Both the award-winning KLoé Hotel in Bukit Bintang and Kapas Condominium encapsulate their design ethos expressed in modern Malaysian design.

“Good design, to me, is like a captivating piece of art that you can inhabit. It’s about creating a form that resonates with beauty, one that evokes our senses, our emotions and one that inspires,” muses Masyerin.

“Design isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s also about function—how a space enhances people’s lives. A well-designed space emphasises how the users will function and feel,” adds Norashidah.

Well-designed products can also seamlessly marry form and function, exemplified by the King Living Jasper Sofa's innovative design. Beyond its elegant aesthetics, the sofa ingeniously incorporates smart technology and discreet storage solutions, embodying a perfect blend of style and practicality for modern living spaces.

“Since we began S/LAB 10, we’ve been committed to sustainable innovation. Innovation is a cornerstone of good design. Pushing boundaries, exploring new materials, and embracing technology,” opines Sim.

“Innovation also embraces flexibility—design which adapts to your lifestyle while adding value to it in unexpected ways,” continues Wang.

Sustainability and innovation are evident in King Living products, particularly their steel frames crafted with precision from recycled and recyclable materials, which are the foundation of award-winning King Living sofas, such as the Jasper and Delta. This commitment not only enhances the durability and strength of their furniture but also reflects the brand's dedication to eco-friendly practices and forward-thinking design.

All the architects are passionate about the importance of sustainability in good design. “It’s our responsibility to design with the future in mind. A building should be energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and minimise its impact on the environment,” states Masyerin.

To which Norashidah concludes: “Timelessness is another aspect of sustainable design. Trends may come and go, but good design is long-lasting.”
