Erco demonstrates the remarkable ways in which lighting can be used to elevate the user experience and design of a space
Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group in collaboration with Carlo Ratti Associati, CapitaSpring is one of Singapore’s striking new landmarks. The thoughtful use of illumination in this building is the work of Nipek, a lighting design firm based in Singapore and Japan, that taps into the brilliance and creativity that light can bring; the space is lit with architectural lighting from German manufacturer Erco.
As Nipek describes it, “lighting is designed to respond to the architecture, landscape elements and function by carefully selecting the type of light fixtures and the colour of the light”. In CapitaSpring’s lobby, Erco’s Atrium downlights highlight the contrasts in the materials, while the Parscan spotlights help guide visitors into the space while keeping the ceiling design clean-lined.

Erco has also provided the illumination for another notable project in Singapore: OUE Bayfront, a commercial building that underwent a “re-lighting process” to replace its existing lamps with the more eco-conscious
and sustainable LED lights.
Lighting Planners Associates (LPA) teamed up with Erco to illuminate the artworks within the spacious ground-floor plaza and incorporate lighting that comfortably guides visitors to the reception area. In the lobby, Erco’s Quintessence Directional, Atrium and Parscan lighting fixtures help create a well-lit environment that also highlights the art on the walls.

Further afield, in the South Korean city of Hwaseong, is another striking landmark. The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Namyang, designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, is also illuminated by Erco products; lighting design practice Bitzro & Partners envisioned the two towers to appear as a striking beacon for hope and peace.
In Melbourne’s central business district, the Turkish sandstone feature wall in the lobby of Bourke Place is highlighted with Erco’s Gimbal lighting to create shadow play in the mixed-use development. The work of Buckford Illumination Group, the lighting design in the lobby conveys both the vastness and vivacity of this space.

Another striking landmark in South Korea that demonstrates the impact of outdoor lighting is the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, which is illuminated with outdoor products from Erco. The beautiful royal residence was first constructed during the 14th century and is considered an architectural masterpiece. The pagoda-style building draws millions of visitors from around the world, and is stunning to behold at night with the Erco outdoor lights enhancing the architectural elements and adding to overall magical atmosphere.
Realised in collaboration with Bitzro & Partners, a leading practitioner of lighting design in South Korea, the firm aimed to create a spectular journey through time with its use of light for the Gyeongbokgung Palace. “We now live in the 21st century, but the nights we see are exactly the same as what people saw 500 years ago,” says Kiyoung Ko, founder, CEO and design principal of the firm. “The idea was to plan the lighting so that people who are visiting the palace today could experience a similar feeling to those who were visiting and living there half a millennium ago.”
As these projects would doubtless demonstrate, Erco’s goal is to achieve more with less, and make the human element the focus of its lighting products. It is the company’s firm belief that lighting should be placed strategically within a space, and the benefits should be manifold: allowing the architectural design to shine, adding to the activity and atmosphere of each space, improving the user experience, and effectively saving on material costs and energy.
