Edmund Ng is not one to shy away from a challenge. When the award-winning architect was presented with a project along Sunset Way, he chose to look beyond its limitations: an aging property sitting on a large piece of sloping land and an imposing retaining wall that cut through the terrain. Instead, Ng saw its latent potential. “It looked imposing, and at first glance, most people would see it as an obstacle. But I saw something else.” What began as a ‘something else’ became the catalyst for a bold architectural exercise—one that resulted in a trio of modern minimalist homes, each distinct in character yet unified by a shared design language.

Spanning approximately 4,500 square feet of land each—with built-up areas exceeding 10,000 square feet—the site offered considerable room for creativity for Edmund Ng Architects. Their first task was to understand the land and to work with, rather than against it. He embraced the natural topography and turned it into an advantage. “By working with the contours and the height, we designed the houses to rise above the retaining wall, gaining panoramic views and a strong sense of privacy,” Ng explains.

Landscape was not an afterthought but an organising principle. Courtyards, planted terraces, and layered pockets of greenery dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, creating a calmness throughout. “We didn’t just build on the land—we brought the green into the architecture itself,” he says. The result is three homes that feel deeply connected to nature: open, airy, and grounded.

Interiors anchored by comfort, connection, and V-ZUG kitchens

Inside, the architectural clarity continues with interiors conceived to feel expansive, serene, and intuitively livable. Designed for multi-generational living, each home embodies Ng’s guiding principles—light, openness, and connection; translating into spaces with generous ceiling heights, long sightlines, and a palette of natural materials. Strategic openings allow daylight to filter in from multiple directions. Even intimate spaces like the master suite’s bathtub open onto greenery, delivering what Ng describes as “a perfect balance between transparency and tranquility.”

At the heart of each home is the kitchen—conceived as a warm, communal hub where families can come together. It was essential for Ng that the appliances align with the architecture’s clarity and refinement. This is where V-ZUG played a pivotal role. “The kitchen is a warm gathering space designed for connection,” says Ng. “We chose V-ZUG appliances for their craftsmanship, precision, and quietly luxurious design.”

Across the homes, he integrated a suite of V-ZUG’s most advanced appliances, including the CookTop V4000 with four induction zones, 600mm Slideout Hood with glass fascia, the Combair V4000 oven, and the AdoraDish V6000 dishwasher. Each piece is designed to operate with intuitive ease, enhancing the cooking experience while remaining visually unobtrusive. What’s more: the appliances’ minimalist mirrored finishes, refined interfaces, and whisper-quiet performance integrate seamlessly into the kitchen, allowing the surrounding materiality of the kitchen—stone, timber, and subtle metallic accents—to take centre stage.

For Ng, the decision to incorporate V-ZUG into the Sunset Way homes was also rooted in longstanding admiration. Over the years, he has incorporated the Swiss brand across multiple residential projects, drawn not only to its technical precision but to its design philosophy—one that mirrors his own. “I have always appreciated how V-ZUG approaches innovation with restraint,” he shares. “Their appliances don’t shout for attention; they elevate the space quietly, through performance and craftsmanship.” This alignment made the partnership a natural fit, allowing the kitchens to function as both aesthetic anchors and purposeful, meaningful spaces for daily life.

A lasting vision

“Ultimately, a kitchen, to me, transcends mere functionality; it should seamlessly integrate into the overall design of the home, both in form and in feeling,” notes Ng. These Sunset Way homes are proof of this ethos. More than just beautifully designed spaces, the interiors and kitchens are lived environments where architecture, technology, and lifestyle align.
