A look inside Curvy.Dining, a cafe that challenges conventional architecture through organic fluid geometry, material innovations, and forward-thinking master planning.
Industrial zones defined by auto repair shops and utilitarian warehouses rarely evoke images of tranquil leisure. Yet tucked deep within Soi Srinakarin-Romklao 19, a pristine white architectural volume unfolds like an oasis. Designed by Unknown Surface Studio, Curvy.Dining—a 250-square-metre cafe and dining pavilion—is more than a trendy destination. It represents a clever spatial intervention, conceived to overcome its obscure site location while breathing vibrant new energy into a former industrial wasteland.
Rather than following conventional paths by filling every square metre of the site with a rigid box, the architects adopted a long-term master planning perspective. Drawing inspiration from wild daisies growing across the vacant lot, they translated the flower's fluid geometry into a free-form architectural structure anchored on the front corner of the 1.5-rai property. This strategic placement preserves an expansive green lawn for public enjoyment while leaving room for future dining expansions. Sacrificing building footprint today provided the catalyst to revitalize neglected land, proving that intelligent design can generate both social vibrancy and lasting economic value.

Radical blooming
The design journey began with a clear business objective: crafting a test-bed cafe and restaurant on a conservative budget without over-committing the entire site before testing market potential. Unknown Surface Studio turned this constraint into an architectural opportunity by positioning the 250-square-metre pavilion at the front corner to serve as a visual landmark—attracting passersby from the main road without relying on oversized commercial signage.
This strategy aligns seamlessly with the firm's ethos of design disruption. Rejecting standard box geometries aligned strictly to property lines, the team developed an organic form rooted in site context, as Stamp Siwanat Nattaborvornphal, co-founder of Unknown Surface Studio, recalls: “Upon first inspecting the site, we realized that clearing the overgrown lot would reveal an open green lawn. We wanted the building to stand out as a crisp white form against the grass. Discovering wild daisies scattered across the plot inspired us to translate the flower’s organic character directly into the architectural identity.”

The organic profile of the wild daisy was decoded into a radial symmetry diagram, radiating outward from a central core like flower pollen. The geometry expands into three principal layers: a central focal core, an air-conditioned indoor zone, and a semi-outdoor circulation arcade. Modulating these radial axes yielded curving, petal-like walls of varying lengths. This plan layout establishes a balanced architectural scale independent of plot boundaries, creating a strong visual identity capable of anchoring future developments across the property.

Fluid spatiality
With the daisy outline established, the architects set Curvy.Dining apart through subtractive spatial design rather than additive construction. Instead of erecting solid boundary walls, the team carved out portions of the outer mass to create a continuous circular semi-outdoor walkway. As the design team explains: “Carving into the mass generated an engaging circulation loop that plays continuously with light and shadow, filtering sunlight through alternating solid walls and carved openings.”

Above Carved architectural masses yield layered arches and circular stepping-stone paths leading toward the entrance.

This subtractive spatial carving creates a sensation of slow reveal. Rather than leading directly to a coffee counter, the path guides visitors through overlapping arched arcades, encouraging them to savor shifting plays of light and shadow throughout the day. Green pockets integrated along architectural seams blur the lines between structure and natural context. Stepping into the cafe grounds, the frantic pace of urban life slows down, preparing visitors for the dining experience within.

Experimental craft
Effortless free-form geometry often conceals complex construction processes. For Curvy.Dining, the primary challenge lay in executing the curved exterior facade. Because contractors utilized traditional in-situ brick masonry and plastering on site, maintaining consistent curvature across every carved arch required rigorous quality control.
“Because the carved arches flow continuously around the building, maintaining precise uniformity was critical,” the architects recall. “On-site masonry required multiple revisions—we regularly sprayed markings on unfinished walls to indicate sections that needed rework until every curve reached perfection.”

Stepping inside, spatial complexity deepens with fluted ceiling ribs that sweep upward from perimeter walls to frame a central skylight core. To maintain construction schedules and budget constraints, the team replaced heavy cast concrete with lightweight, flexible HMR (High Moisture Resistance) panels..
“The primary difficulty stemmed from the unique dimensions of each panel,” the team notes. “Every piece had to be fabricated to custom templates and assembled in strict sequence.” To preserve the purity of the organic curves, structural columns were concealed within thick partition walls, seamlessly merging interior aesthetics with structural engineering.

Climate responsive
Responding to tropical heat, Curvy.Dining incorporates climate-responsive design principles. The outer circular arcade enveloping the air-conditioned dining room functions as an effective thermal buffer, screening direct solar radiation.
“This semi-outdoor layer shades the interior glazing from direct sunlight,” the architects explain. “Solar heat passes through the arcade first, keeping indoor temperatures comfortable while reducing air conditioning loads throughout the day.”

While blocking excessive heat, the interior remains bright and uplifting. A large circular skylight positioned at the center functions like a flower core, drawing soft daylight deep into the dining hall. This passive lighting strategy minimizes daytime electricity usage while creating ideal natural lighting conditions for cafe photography.
Embracing 21st-century manufacturing, the project partnered with SCG to fabricate 3D-printed outdoor sculptural seating scattered across the lawn. Experimenting with 3D concrete printing allowed the team to explore seamless, cantilevered furniture forms, merging advanced material technology with outdoor leisure.

Architectural oasis
Beyond visual appeal, the overarching design goal focused on elevating the user experience. The airy spatial volume and meticulous detailing create a welcoming sanctuary where visitors naturally linger. “In many visually striking cafes, guests take photos and leave quickly,” the architects reflect. “Here, patrons routinely stay for hours, completely at ease.”
Soaring ceiling heights exceeding six metres lined in off-white plaster provide a canvas for shifting light and shadow. Built-in joinery rendered in warm mustard, soft green, and natural timber draws the hues of the outer lawn inside, creating a fresh, approachable atmosphere. Combined with pet-friendly outdoor grounds, Curvy.Dining has firmly established itself as a vibrant architectural oasis in Bangkok's Krungthep Kreetha district.
