Local interior design studio Summerhaus D’zign shares its secret for good design, including how to update your home without major renovations

A little more than 10 years ago in 2012, Larry Lim decided to scratch an itch. Inspired by the many business owners and entrepreneurs that he frequently came into contact with as a bank executive, he decided that it was time to leave his stable banking career for a venture of his own.

Today, that itch has grown into Summerhaus D’zign, a successful design studio that Lim helms with his wife, Jess Koh, who is an interior designer by training. “I really like creating something out of nothing. I love change as well as challenging the norms,” says Lim. Interior design encompasses all that, with every new project bringing new perspectives, requirements, and opportunities for creativity based on the client’s needs and wants.

The firm specialises in residential projects for private residences that fall into what Lim describes as an under-served middle market segment, between the entry-level properties and the aspirational homes that only the top one per cent can afford. Always the perfect balance of form and function, its designs tailor aesthetics to reflect the owner’s unique personality, while never missing the mark on meeting the practical considerations of real life.

“We believe that as much as design should be aesthetically pleasing, it must be realistic and practical for everyday use,” Lim says. “After all, we are creating homes where our clients can comfortably live.”

Here, Lim shares four tips for updating your space.

1. It doesn’t have to be difficult

An update doesn’t need to mean major renovations. Loose furniture and decorative items are a good place to start. It could be as simple as replacing the sofa with one that’s a different shape, colour and texture, or buying a new dining table and chairs. Wall treatments are often overlooked. Instead of a plain painted wall, try a wallpaper, which can dramatically change the look of the space. A simple reconfiguration can do wonders–try finding new spots for the TV, sofa and dining table. A new layout could unexpectedly result in a visually larger or more open space.

2. Don’t fall back into old ways

Quite often, we see newly designed homes that look like an updated replica of the old space. There’s a tendency to fall back on using the same colour tones, materials, textures and layouts. After all, it’s hard to move away from what had worked before. We get many requests for earth toned designs. In such cases, we’d offer new ideas that still meet the client’s requirements. Instead of having all walls plainly painted in an earthy tone, we may suggest an accent wall with a textured paint effect such as travertino or ottocento. We can also explore new ideas with loose items such as furniture and decorative pieces as they can be easily replaced, thus offering room for trial and error.

3. Add colour

If you are unsure, keep permanent fixtures and walls in neutrals like black, white, or grey–you can never go wrong with that. Add colour with items such as a sofa, carpet, mismatched armchairs, a sideboard, or an oversized art piece. The idea is to draw the eye to the colourful furniture or decorative items, while using the neutral background as a canvas to bring everything together.

4. Find inspiration in trends

We have been getting requests for more modern takes on luxury, which means simplified, clean lines that are more understated. Mounting marble slabs instead of paintings on walls is very popular now. Combining a good mix of materials and textures here, such as woods, fabrics, metals and stones, can add a lot of details and depth. Bold patterns and colours are also currently in favour. Terrazzo, especially, is making a comeback, particularly those with a light base colour sprinkled with bold specks. It works very well to bring a fun, light-hearted feel to the space and the colourful specks in the terrazzo can be used to tie together different colours in the interior.
