In the third video of this series, learn how Goy Architects, Mr Shopper Studio and Prestige Global Designs have dreamt up beautiful kitchens that creatively utilise Hafary countertop surfaces and tiles

The kitchen is a space for fun culinary experiments, but also a social zone where homeowners can dine, wine and enjoy time with their loved ones. So when it comes to crafting a kitchen that celebrates epicurean passions, there are ample creative opportunities that designers and their clients can explore while building bespoke kitchens they desire.

When homegrown tiles purveyor Hafary challenged three local interior design firms to create kitchen concepts that blend style with function, the studios relished the experience and came up with stunning spaces with wide-ranging influences. Shot in the award-winning Hafary Gallery designed by Park + Associates, the third video of this design series produced by Tatler Homes Singapore featured the kitchen concepts by Goy Architects, Prestige Global Designs and Mr Shopper Studio.

“We believe that design should be a blend of function, comfort, lifestyle and visual attraction; all of these should be tailored to reflect the owners’ personality,” declares Kate Deng, co-founder of Mr Shopper Studio. “So for this kitchen concept, we took inspiration from two contrasting scenes: a beautiful bar lounge indoors, matched with the lively atmosphere of an alfresco seafood barbecue stall. The goal is to create a dynamic and versatile space where these two different moods can exist and integrate seamlessly, whether it’s day or night.”

This kitchen is the perfect setting for lively house parties, where one could easily envision having pre-dinner snacks and drinks at the stylish bar lounge followed by freshly-grilled dishes over convivial conversations. To create its enviable setting, Deng selected from Hafary some of its outdoor-friendly and heat-resistant porcelain designs in large-format sizes, which include the Florim Stone’s Marble Emperador tiles that are applied to the barbecue zone. The same material is also applied to the island countertop with a waterfall edge, to amplify the sense of visual unity of this culinary concept. The bar area also incorporates glossy Yamuna tiles from Florim Stone “to create a sophisticated look”, adds Deng.

To complete the look, Deng picked out solid-coloured slabs in complementary shades from Lapitec—these include the Avana that’s applied to the base of the outdoor dining table, as well as the Bianco Crema and Terra Ebano which were applied to the doors below the counter for added storage.

When it came to the kitchen concept by Prestige Global Designs, director Jeremy Tay aimed to create a space that promotes a sense of peacefulness, where its users could enjoy a quiet time while having a quick coffee and breakfast, or gather for a cosy meal together with their family and friends. “For this gourmet kitchen, we took inspiration from the sense of zen that you get from a bamboo forest, or in a Japanese garden,” explains Tay. “The kitchen looks out to a terrace lined with bamboo, with the island as a focal point of the culinary space. Its rock-like form references the design of Japanese Zen gardens.”

To create this ideal sense of serenity, Prestige Global Designs picked out two particular designs from Florim Stone: the Marble Breach White in glossy finish and the Metal burnished in matte finish. “These contrasting patterns make a statement and result in a layered look. We also love the metallic finish of the Metal burnished design from Florim Stone, and how it is applied to the island to form a faceted design,” adds Tay.

Other stylish details include the quadrilateral gold-trimmed lining on the wooden flooring, which echoes the angular form of the geometric ceiling in the kitchen. “The same design language is also applied on the decorative screens flanking the gourmet kitchen, further adding texture and interest to the space,” says Tay. Additionally, the ambient lighting helps to highlight the beautiful textures of the Florim Stone Marble Breach White tiles that are applied to the feature wall. These are companied with the Japanese-inspired lamps from Vibia, and outdoor bar stools from Minotti that are chosen for the materials and forms that help to continue the graceful garden-inspired design.

Mother nature is also a major source of inspiration for Goy Architects, a homegrown firm known for blending modern and contemporary structures into a tropical context. Goy Zhenru, the namesake of founder of Goy Architects, envisioned a kitchen that is heart of the home, connecting three multigenerational houses within a compound that’s surrounded by verdant terraced gardens. “As a studio practice, we often find inspiration from nature and regional textures. To us, a well-designed space harmonises with its natural environment, blurring the threshold of the interior and exterior spaces,” says Goy.

The architect took inspiration from the ancient Asian aesthetic concept of “borrowed scenery” for the kitchen, where greenery serves as a beautiful backdrop for the interior and architectural design concept. “We designed the kitchen and the bar in an L-shape configuration that looks out to beautiful views of the tropical garden,” says Goy. “One of the unique elements we wanted to highlight is the interconnection of the three houses, through the terraced garden that features seats that offer an alfresco activity space next to the indoor kitchen. This harmonises the interior and exterior space as one unified spatial experience.”

Her team picked out porcelain slabs from Florim, which include the Stone Brown and Stone Noir. “We are drawn to their subtle yet expressive grain and layered tonality, and how the porcelain slabs resemble the textures and tones found on natural stone,” says the architect. “The Stone Brown is warm and earthy, while the Stone Noir showcases a more rugged charcoal grey texture. In a way, these slabs give the much-needed gravitas to the space without overpowering the view of the landscape.”

While the homegrown firms aptly demonstrated their creative philosophies for these three stunning kitchen concepts, these talents acknowledge at the same time the importance of a good collaborator to help turn such dream dreams into reality. “We have been working with Hafary for many years; we believe in collaborating with partners who are accountable and serious about what they are doing,” shares Tay. Deng concurs: “It’s been a rewarding journey working with Hafary. Their diverse tile selection and large format slabs have enabled me to create distinctive designs, and they’re always delivering high quality and excellent service that never disappoints.”
