Throughout the ages, marble and other natural stone varieties have long been sought after, and are known for both their timeless beauty and durability. These have been the materials of choice for notable landmarks around the world, and have been applied to the most stately houses and grand palaces to cathedrals and museums.

Italian stone purveyor Antolini is among one of the most notable name associated with these natural materials, celebrating the unique peculiarities and aesthetic of each marble and stone variety that they carry; in Singapore, they are available exclusively at Hafary. Based in Verona, Italy, the firm works closely with leading quarries in Europe and worldwide while honing its stone processing prowess and enhancing the qualities of these natural materials through new technological processes.

One of Antolini’s most significant innovations is Azerocare, a protective treatment applied to marble and onyx slabs to minimise stains and corrosion, as well as the Azerobact antibacterial treatment that prevents the growth of bacteria and mould on these beautiful surfaces.

These are qualities that Singapore design firms such as Summerhaus D’zign, Quod Architects and SS+D are well familiar with, and aim to elevate through their luxurious home designs. For this special collaboration with Hafary and Tatler Homes Singapore, the three homegrown firms have created unique interior concepts featuring an inventive use of stone surfaces from Antolini. As part of this collaboration, the firms took part in a video explaining their respective design concepts, while exploring the Hafary Gallery designed by Park + Associates.

“We’ve been using natural stone from Antolini since Hafary started bringing it into Singapore some years ago, and we have never looked back. This Italian producer has really unique pieces that range from marble to granite and quartzite,” says Larry Lim, managing partner of Summerhaus D’zign.

For this creative exercise, Lim worked closely with his firm’s chief conceptualiser Jenno Marco Misa to design a Good Class Bungalow envisioned for a couple that loves to entertain. They selected the Bianco Lasa Covelano for its brushstroke-like veins arranged in a book-matched pair as a feature wall, the Irish Green stone for how it highlights the “invaluable richness and diversity of verdant forests”, and Amazonite for how it complements the other luxurious stone varieties in the living room.

Adds Lim: “We wanted to celebrate the beauty of natural materials in all its many colours and forms. We kept the design simple and understated, accentuated only by the natural patterns of the stone slabs from Antolini. We wanted to show how versatile natural stone can be when different varieties are put together in an interior and how they can complement other materials like wood, metal and fabric.”

When it came to conceptualising her design, Quod Architects founder Diong Fuhan took inspiration from her company creed: to design with purpose, innovation, and environmental sustainability in mind for all projects. She selected stone varieties such as the following for her project, in earthy and green tones—Silver Stream, Bianco Lasa Covelano, Breche Fantastique, Dover White, Irish Green and Taj Mahal—in order to create a soothing tableau inspired by nature.

“We prioritise user-centered solutions that are both functional and aesthetically appealing,” she explains. “For this project, we drew inspiration from the colours of nature. In particular, we used earthy tones to create a warm and welcoming space that connects with the outdoors. We selected some stone varieties from Antolini in a cohesive mix of colours that complement each other perfectly. The carefully chosen selection from Antolini really enhances our organic design. These stone slabs create a visual connection with nature through their beautiful patterns, textures, and earthy tones.”

Sam Loh, founder of SS+D, professes a similar creative affinity with Antolini’s enchanting stone selection, and took inspiration from the world of art to elevate the simple beauty of these natural materials.  “We see this home concept as a living gallery, and we felt deeply inspired by the natural beauty of these slabs from Antolini. The wavy pattern of the Silver Stream marble reminds us of a river. And we especially like how the Amazonite has a green hue that reminds us of beautiful jade pieces,” he says, commenting on his selection of stone slabs for the project.

Loh has as much admiration for the local stone purveyor, citing the numerous successful and happy collaborations he has had while using their products. “We are always delighted to work with Hafary and often see the tile purveyor as a market leader and a learning example. Not only have they been providing us with a wide variety of options, but they have also led design trends by constantly updating their product range. It inspires us as designers to have a more creative way of approaching spatial design,” says the designer.
