The new eight-episode drama is based on the true story of a banker who stole one cent from all of his customers in the 1990s

Malaysian film company Astro Shaw, helmed by Raja Jastina Raja Arshad, has released a new eight-episode original drama series titled One Cent Thief. The series chronicles the true story of Aman Shah Ahmad, a banker who amassed a fortune by stealing one cent from all his customers.

Raja Jastina said the film company was in talks with Aman Shah Ahmad, the real "one cent thief", for a long time. "We believe that the fresh storyline presented through One Cent Thief will appeal to audiences of all backgrounds, and it will air across Malay, English, Tamil and Chinese channels," she said.

The crime thriller was created by Alfie Palermo and produced after he read about the infamous banker turned cyber-criminal and was interested in making a show about his exploits. Part of the reason he wanted to make the series was to highlight the data security issue in the banking industry.

"We hope that One Cent Thief is a show of international calibre that makes the nation proud and attracts the attention of international audiences, putting our best creative works on the map", Raja Jastina said.
