For this year’s International Waffle Day, we explore the holiday’s Swedish origins and look for the best places in Hong Kong to indulge in the fluffy treats
Waffle Day came about by accident. The holiday originated in Sweden where, on March 25, people would celebrate Feast of the Annunciation, also known as Our Lady Day, or Vårfrudagen in Swedish. Because of a simple mispronunciation, however, the holiday soon became Våffeldagen, or Waffle Day.
Now, Swedes gather with friends and family every year to make waffles to celebrate the arrival of spring, serving them with whipped cream and jam. But the Swedes are far from the only culture to enjoy this sweet treat. There’s Hong Kong’s beloved egg waffles, a popular street food, Belgian waffles, that are often dusted with icing sugar, American waffles, eaten soaked in maple syrup … The list goes on and on.
This International Waffle Day, enjoy this globally appreciated treat at one of the best places for waffles in Hong Kong.
Shake It

Above Shake It’s waffle sandwiches are irresistibly delicious
Hong Kong has two types of traditional waffles: the popular bubble-wrap-shaped variant and a sandwich of quarter-circle waffle known as gaak zai beng (“small square cake”) or gaap beng (“cake sandwich”), usually served hot off the press with a filling of condensed milk and peanut butter.
Shake It in Mong Kok pays homage to this beloved staple with a menu of waffle sandwiches with three categories of generous fillings: fresh fruits, classics like chocolate and hazelnut and pastoral—think indulgent fillings wrapped in a sweet potato waffle. The red dragon fruit mint waffle is an unexpectedly refreshing choice, while the pistachio waffle satisfies with nutty flavours.
Beyond loaded waffle sandwiches, Shake It also serves American-style milkshakes and yoghurt parfaits.

Waffling Beans

Above Celebrate International Waffle Day with Belgian waffles from Waffling Beans
Waffling Beans prides itself on serving authentic Belgian waffles from Liège, made with a thicker dough than its Brussels variant, which gives the treat a slightly caramelised crust and fluffier middle. Waffles feature as part of almost every item at this Kennedy Town café, replacing sesame buns in burgers and as substitutes for toast triangles in Full Englishes, but also just paired with a variety of sweet toppings for a familiar, comforting treat. Plus, this Kennedy Town café is pet-friendly, so bring your pups along on Waffle Day.
