With 13 restaurants under its umbrella, this new food hall is the answer to your lunchtime woes

Whether you love it or hate it, food halls are here to stay, if the recent opening of Basehall 02 in the basement of Central's Jardine House is any indication. With a panoply of food options—13 in total, and many of them long-time fixtures in Hong Kong's street food scene—there's something for everyone here. Just down the hall from Basehall 01, this sister food hall offers a much-expanded space—18,000 square feet with 300 seats, to be exact—featuring interior design by Dix Design Studio with bar, booth and table seating for everyone.

With so much to take in, where's the best place to start? Keep reading for our pick of the six food counters you can't miss on your first visit to Basehall 02.

Artifact

Tatler Asia

Just because it's a food hall, doesn't mean there can't be fine dining, as 18-seater restaurant Artifact aptly demonstrates. Headed by ex-Silencio chef Sato Kiyoshi, Artifact serves contemporary Japanese-influenced tasting menus with a particular focus on caviar. Featuring artful plating and seasonal Japanese ingredients elevated by the complex salinity of caviar, a meal here is an unlikely fine-dining gem within casual surrounds. Make sure to leave room too for the salmon roe rice bowl at the end, mixed with a raw yolk and a choice of two first-draw aged soy sauces sourced by Sato from family-run soy sauce makers in Japan.

Artifact offers lunch and dinner menus, with the former comprising four courses for HK$488—to add even more caviar to the dishes, guests can add another HK$488 on top, or opt for the three-glass wine pairing at HK$388 per person. Meanwhile, the dinner menu is priced at HK$1,288, with the option of more caviar for HK$788 or a five-glass wine pairing at HK$688.

Maru de Sankaku

Before, a craving for Maru de Sankaku's signature ramen in creamy snapper broth usually meant a trek up steep Aberdeen Street for a seat at its original location. Now, you can enjoy the selfsame bowl from the Osaka-born brand right in the comfort of Basehall 02.

On Lee Noodle Shop

Tatler Asia

Having attracted flocks of noodle lovers to Shau Kei Wan since it opened in 1966, On Lee now has a presence in Central, offering its famed fish ball and beef brisket noodles, and condensed milk toast to the area's lunch crowds. Come here for nostalgic comfort food to soothe the soul after a busy morning.

Kamcentre Roast Goose

Tatler Asia

When asked about their favourite place for char siu or roast goose, we're confident a fair number of Hongkongers will answer "Kamcentre Roast Goose". While its original location is hidden away inside the bowling alley of the South China Athletic Association, Kamcentre is now front and centre at Basehall 02. Its assorted roast meats rice dish is perfect for one person, but larger groups shouldn't miss out on ordering the whole roast goose plated "phoenix-style".

Both Street

A firm street food favourite in Yuen Long, Both Street is now bringing its famed Taiwanese-style gua bao to the city. Trained at Otto e Mezzo and Tate Dining Room, owner So Gun's creations have consistently attracted queues to Both Street's street stall for years, so its addition to the Central dining scene is a boon for foodies all around. Aside from the gua bao, don't miss out on the pressed bread, which ranges from savoury types featuring four-cheese, to taro or matcha dessert versions.

Cookie Vission

Tatler Asia

Also laying claim to a constant queue is Tai Hang fixture Cookie Vission, famed for its rich, dense cookies—some even packing a melted middle. Baked daily with ever-changing seasonal flavours, the Basehall 02 location also adds to the brand's repertoire with exclusive desserts and soft-serve ice cream for those days when the air-con just doesn't cut it.
