A look back at the week-long celebration that was Penang Cocktail Week

Held annually in George Town, Penang Cocktail Week shines a spotlight on the island’s vibrant bar industry. From industry veterans to award-winning mixologists, the festival attracts international talent to the city—sharing knowledge, honing local skills, and fostering exchange.

It’s a celebration designed not only to showcase Penang’s bar scene, but also to create a lively platform where professionals and the public can come together to appreciate cocktail culture.

Founded by Koh Yung Shen, bartender and owner of Backdoor Bodega, the festival first launched in 2023 as Penang’s inaugural cocktail event. What began as an initiative to highlight and support the city’s growing bar culture has quickly expanded; this year’s edition was bigger than ever, featuring the addition of Penang’s first-ever bar show.

Just as Malaysia’s culinary talent is enjoying international acclaim, the festival hopes to secure the same recognition for its cocktail scene—boosting tourism, supporting the industry, encouraging exchange of knowledge, and most importantly, building community.
