These quick recipes require minimal ingredients so you can easily recreate them in your own kitchen

Look out world: South Korean pop stars may have more up their sleeves than just singing and dancing.

In recent times, the Korean wave has taken over the food scene with several viral recipes appearing all over social media. And this is because many of our favourite K-pop stars have generously shared their creative take on popular food, much to the elation of their fans—many of whom have obviously tried their hand at recreating those recipes.

For instance, Mark of K-pop boyband Got7 has demonstrated how he spices up the typical convenience store ramen by adding sausages, rice cakes, and cheese. This recipe has since become a favourite among his fans, and is famously referred to as “The Mark Meal”.

If you’re looking for a new recipe to add to your personal cookbook or simply craving a late-night snack, below are some idol recipes to follow.

1. Tteokbokki by Exo’s Chanyeol

Making its rounds across social media in Korea is a recipe by Exo member Chanyeol, who has added a modern touch to tteokbokki a classic Korean spicy rice cake dish. With all the classic ingredients included (chilli powder, red pepper paste, sugar, eggs, green onions, fish cakes, rice cakes), his “secret” ingredients are soy sauce and crushed garlic.

Slowly combine all the ingredients in a pan and watch as the many ingredients come together to form a rich, flavourful gravy. The addition of garlic gives a robust nutty flavour that is otherwise absent in the simple dish.

2. Truffle Jjajang Ramyeon by Mamamoo’s Hwasa

Hwasa of Mamamoo is well known for her healthy appetite and love for food. She regularly shows off her mukbang (self-filmed video of someone eating a large quantity of food) moments on her own show, Home Alone.

Thanks to her, we now know how Korean ramen and truffle would taste good together.

Start by cooking the ramen in water and adding the condiments. Take your favourite truffle oil and generously pour some into the pot to combine. The result is a deep, savoury dish, best suited for those late-night cravings.

3. Crab-octopus seafood ramyeon by Dawn

Don’t be intimidated by the fancy name because this dish by rapper-singer Dawn is surprisingly easy to make.

Add the ramen seasoning to a pot of boiling water, then add one crab, garlic, noodles, and lastly, octopus. A seafood lover’s paradise, this dish easily translates into a pot of home-cooked goodness.

4. Braised pomfret by Wayv’s Kun

Soft and juicy, this pomfret dish pairs well with a bowl of fluffy rice. It can also be enjoyed on its own.

Set aside a quiet evening for this as the recipe takes time and patience. Among the ingredients needed for this recipe by Wayv’s Kun is the pomfret fish, chives, cooking wine, ginger, garlic, and soy sauce. Start by chopping all the vegetables and spices and lay them all over the pomfret on a shallow plate. Drizzle the sauces and steam for eight minutes.

5. Basil Pesto Pizza by ikon’s Yunhyeong

Incorporating the flavours of basil and pesto, this green pizza is great for entertaining a gathering of friends.

Get your hands messy when making the pizza dough (arguable the best part of the process). Roll it out and add the ingredients to it. Then, carefully lay the basil leaves on top and bake for 15 minutes. Bite into the strong scent of basil and a garlicky pesto among the cheese and tomatoes present on the pizza. A true marriage of flavours.

6. Janchi guksu by BTS Jin

This wouldn’t be a complete list of K-pop idols’ viral recipes without a BTS mention.

Follow the band’s resident chef Jin to create this delicious noodle recipe that comprises thin white noodles in a savoury broth.

To make it, you will need thin wheat noodles, green onion, onion, Korean zucchini, a carrot, kimchi, cooking oil, black pepper, and salt. Cut the vegetables into slices and stir-fry. Add the broth next; for this, you will need to prepare dried anchovies, dried kelp and place all ingredients in a pot of boiling water. After boiling, remove the ingredients and add soy sauce and salt. Simmer for three to four minutes. Next, boil the noodles. Lastly, lay your noodles in a bowl and pour in the delicious broth.

7. Cheonggukjang by Somi

This traditional Korean recipe made with fermented soybeans makes for a wonderful broth.

Somi adds onions, kimchi, zucchinis, and heaps of pork to her version of cheonggukjang. A dollop of garlic, cheonggukjang paste, and red pepper paste complete the dish. Get ready to impress your friends and family with this bold dish.
