Sweeten your National Doughnut Day festivities on June 2 with these decadent creations, comprising novel and classic flavours
The first Friday of June is National Doughnut Day, but you shouldn’t have to wait till June 2 this year to satisfy your cravings for irresistible doughnuts. No one quite knows when this quintessential bakery confection was invented, but one thing’s for sure: we can’t get enough of sweet, deep-fried dough, be it stuffed with cream, sprinkled with rainbow sprinkles, or simply glazed with sugar.
By far the most exciting development in the doughnut scene this year is the opening of Mister Donut, the beloved American chain that gained cult status in Japan. It’s renowned for its signature Pon de Ring doughnut, an offering that’s both crispy and chewy with a texture resembling a Japanese mochi. Coming in a range of different flavours, these doughnuts promise to delight with vivid colours and sweeter flavours. Craving other quality doughnuts in the meantime? Here’s our guide to the best doughnuts you can buy in Singapore.

1. Mister Donut
Junction 8 is getting a sweet treat this year. Come May 21, American doughnut chain Mister Donut will be opening its flagship store at the Bishan mall with popular offerings that have endeared it to doughnut-lovers worldwide, especially in Japan. Most famous of all will be the Pon de Ring doughnuts, which features eight mochi balls encased within dough, then deep-fried. Here in Singapore, you’ll be treated to two exclusive Pon de Ring flavours you won’t find anywhere else: strawberry chocolate, and chocolate.
Most of Mister Donut’s offerings are made with baking powder, like the Angel French Cruller. Since the doughnut mixture is more like cake batter than dough, the braided confection is moist, cake-like, and intensely addictive. But if you’re a yeasted doughnut traditionalist, go for the yeast doughnuts instead, which carry a lighter, more complex flavour that’s still beautifully saccharine with the choice of two flavours: sugar raised, and honey dip.
