Find out the latest restaurants to receive this prestigious accolade, which recognises affordable fine dining from delicious street food to cosy bistros
The global economy may be in shambles, but Hong Kong's cheap eats have never been more abundant, with cash-strapped gourmands across town searching out the best morsels for less moolah. Cue the unveiling of Michelin's Bib Gourmand list, which comes ahead of the announcement of the 2023 Michelin Guide Hong Kong & Macau on April 26, and gathers what the guide deems the best establishments serving “high-quality food at budget-friendly prices”.
This is defined as “a high-quality three-course meal” excluding drinks for a maximum of HK$400, for which 65 places have made the cut this year, up from 63 in 2022. Of these, six are new additions: there's Ship Kee in Wan Chai, where the barbecue and dim sum chefs' combined 70-plus years of experience mean some of the best char siu and dim sum in town; Restoran Saya, a new eatery in Tai Kok Tsui staffed by a Thai kitchen team serving Isaan cuisine; and Yi Jia in Shau Kei Wan, which has built a following for its Shanghainese and Sichuanese classics.
As always, there have been exclusions from the previous year. Shane Osborn's casual Central bistro, Cornerstone, has fallen off the list (though this is most likely for cost reasons, given that à la carte mains begin at a relatively hefty HK$278); as has family-owned stalwart Yixin.
There remain head-scratching snubs, too: much like we pointed out last year, the continued absence of crowd-pleasers like Kamcentre Roast Goose, Zagin Soba and Sun Kwai Heung have us perplexed, given their widespread appeal and approachable price point.
Whatever the case, it's always a good time to show support to mom-and-pop eateries everywhere, given the razor-thin margins they operate on—made even thinner by the rising cost of fresh produce. So go on, satiate that hunger pang by dipping into the riches of cheap eats that Hong Kong has to offer.
