What inspired your design for the cover of the Tatler Dining Guide? Tell us about your foodie memory linked to the artwork.
A fun boozy dinner at Karrivin Plaza that started with locally brewed craft beers at Brujo followed by a phenomenal 5-course meal at Metiz. How can you go wrong with that?
Why do you love food and consider yourself a foodie?
The first time I went to Tokyo when I was 22 really did it for me. Sushi Bar Yasuda had set a new standard, and when I moved back to the Philippines I was seeking more experimental and artistic interpretations of Philippine cuisine... And that’s when I tried Toyo Eatery for the first time. I don’t think I was ready for that level of deliciousness. I’ve been hooked ever since!
Describe your style as an artist.
Whimsical, elegant, and orderly.
What is your favourite medium to work with and why?
Pen and ink, because it allows for a precision and feel that can only be achieved with this medium. I truly love to draw.
What do you do when you feel like you are in a creative rut and need inspiration? I live and work in Antipolo, just close enough to the circus that is Makati, and far enough that I can focus and concentrate on my work. If I need inspiration, I’m about 11km away. I frequent art galleries like Leon Gallery, Secret Fresh Gallery, Tarzeer Pictures, and Silverlens and love to eat at Metiz, Fukudaya, Blackbird at the Nielson Tower, and Sala Bistro.
What was it like to have been inspired by food for this project?
I’ve never drawn a lechon with little human legs before. It was a fun project, and I learned more about Filipino food in the past two weeks than I have in the past two months. Thank you Tatler!
