Sort your chocolate cravings with the help of these seven Malaysian chocolatiers

When thinking of Malaysian produce, the mind usually wanders to tropical flavours like pandan, jackfruit, or lemongrass. While we may not be the first country that comes to mind when thinking of chocolate, our homegrown cocoa industry has been flourishing for decades. Cacao plantations pepper the country, with the terroir of different states being reflected in bounties from Perak, Pahang, Kelantan, and Sabah.

With an abundance of cacao comes a wave of bean-to-bar pioneers, showcasing the best of local chocolate harvests. From Malaysian chocolate brands championing the use of local cocoa to those that infuse treats with provincial flavours, here are six chocolatiers you should check out the next time you’re in search of something sweet.

Chocolate Concierge

At the forefront of our local chocolate scene is Chocolate Concierge, known for its impressive selection of single-origin bars and bonbons infused with defining Malaysian flavours. Helmed by Ong Ning Geng, Chocolate Concierge works not only to showcase how tropical climates and various terroirs affect the profiles of each bar but also to shine the spotlight on the efforts of indigenous Malaysian harvesters.

Its Semai, Temuan, and Temiar varieties find their names from the communities that grow each cacao variety used. Find single-origin dark chocolate bars crafted with beans sourced from Kelantan, Johor, Perak, and more. Inventive bonbons can also be found here, flavoured with lime and lemongrass, pineapple and coconut, sweet laksa, and peanut butter toast.

You’ll find chocolate truffles flavoured with teh tarik, complete with notes of black tea and condensed milk, Ipoh white coffee chocolate truffles, and truffles infused with smokey gula Melaka. Also on offer are single-origin chocolate truffles made in collaboration with Chocolate Concierge and Benns Ethicoa.
