Here are unconventional versions of the traditional prosperity toss to try out this festive season

Yee sang is a Cantonese salad, typically consisting of prosperous ingredients such as shredded vegetables, raw fish, condiments, and sweet dressings. Typically tossed while calling out auspicious wishes during the Lunar New Year, no celebration is complete without it. 

We’ve rounded up a selection of unusual versions of the salad, from localised versions with pucuk paku and bunga kantan, to ones with papadam and deep-fried crab, sure to usher in festive excitement for the Year of the Dragon.

Kompassion’s crab yee sang

Beloved neighbourhood Thai eatery Kompassion introduces its spin on yee sang, made with dragon fruit, edamame, nuts, and crab.

Copaa KL’s pucuk paku yee sang

For a local spin on the traditional dish, Copaa KL impress with a salad of pucuk paku, jackfruit, roasted coconut flakes, and more fresh ingredients. The star of the show is the dressing, made with lychee juice and osmanthus flower.

Gooddam’s pork belly yee sang

Slow-roasted pork belly with Sarawak black pepper gravy tops Gooddam’s take on the yee sang. Also available is a version topped with grilled lobster, scallop sashimi, and house-made smoked salmon.
