This quaint neighbourhood within PJ might not be on your radar for good grub, but Taman Megah definitely packs some hidden gems

Taman Megah holds some of the most interesting restaurants in Petaling Jaya, and you should definitely make your way there for reasons other than Fatty Crab (no matter how delicious). This mature neighbourhood is home to some incredible history, with old, unchanging cafes, and new and modern restaurants. Blending the old and new, legendary, decades-old institutions share the block with trendy pasta bars and inventive artisanal bakeries. 

It might be hard to find your way through the neighbourhood, but expect to have a complete culinary journey in Taman Megah. Here are our essential spots that make this neighbourhood so special.

Ikigai Izakaya

Come for their food, stay for their highballs. This modern Japanese-inspired resto-bar blends the spirit of your local bar with comforting Japanese flavours. Perfect for a weekday dinner with your pals, or a weekend catch-up over highballs. Not to mention they are pet friendly!

Bottega PJ

With another branch in KL, Bottega finds its way into the neighbourhood of Taman Megah, and serves as a go-to spot for many in PJ to get their specialty Italian groceries. 

Following the success of their KL branch, the PJ one opened up to the delight of many, with many locals dropping by to pick up wines, cheeses, as well as dining in for a hearty, authentic Italian meal.

Pasar Malam

Every Sunday evening, the streets of Taman Megah are lined with stalls for their weekly pasar malam. With a few famous stalls, including the char kuey teow at the end of the street close to Fatty Crab, or the assam laksa by the entrance of Megah Rise, you can be sure to fulfill any craving here.

Staple Dough

Handmade pasta is the name of the game at Staple Dough. Handmade fresh every day, each pasta is thoughtfully paired with the perfect sauce and pasta shape to bring you the best experience. Having just launched a new menu, those who were old fans have an excuse to go back, and for those who haven’t yet tried, there is no better time than the present.

Magnificent Park Bakery

This playful and inventive bakeshop has crowds flocking over every weekend for not only their pastries, but their brunch menu. Fill up on incredible sandwiches, their “Croger”—a croissant burger!—and more! Make sure you don’t leave without trying their classic French pastries with nostalgic Malaysian flavours, including their takes on Nian Gao, Apam Balik, and Ham Chim Peng.

Hainan Joy Cafe

One of the oldest within the area, this tiny cafe can be easily overlooked, but it's not one you should miss out on. 

Stepping into the cafe feels like walking into a time machine, with old furniture, old cabinets, and that old school bakery vibe. Get your favourite Chinese bakery snacks here, including coconut buns, chiffon cakes, and more. Sit down, have a kaya toast and half-boiled eggs, and enjoy the comfort of this cafe.

66 Chu Yuk Fun

A go-to for many in the neighbourhood, this no-fuss noodle shop serves a small menu that keeps guests coming back for more. Known for their pork noodles, the broth is clean and savoury, perfect for a quick bite. Choose between their classic bowl of noodles, or their pork porridge.

Fatty Crab

It’s hard to do a neighbourhood guide of Taman Megah without Fatty Crab. One of the iconic institutions of not just the neighbourhood, but of the entirety of Klang Valley, and perhaps even Malaysia. Having seen generations of guests go in and out of their store, the queues are never dwindling. Soak up the beloved sweet and sour sauce with some bread, and pair it with their chicken wings and fried rice for the true ultimate experience.
