In the heart of Phuket Town, at the end of a sweeping driveway, stands the magnificent Phra Pitak Chinpracha Mansion. The Architecture: A Mansion of the Tin Barons

Built in 1903 by the influential tin baron Phra Pitak Chinpracha, the mansion is a sprawling example of the architectural 'handshake' between East and West.

On the exterior, the iconic mustard-yellow walls and green-shuttered windows stand out under the protection of the Thai Fine Arts Department, ensuring every inch of the building remains historically accurate. Inside, the air is cool and still, filled with the scent of lemongrass and jasmine. Original green-and-white checkered floor tiles lead you through rooms filled with dark teakwood and Neoclassical Doric columns. The heart of the home—the central courtyard—has been transformed into a state-of-the-art Cooking School. Here, the sun streams through the open roof as students learn to pound curry pastes in the same space where the Chinpracha family once gathered.

The Dining: A Taste of Two Heritages

While many fine-dining spots focus on the 'new', Blue Elephant’s Master Chef Nooror Somany Steppe, a passionate chef who has spent decades in researching the legacy of Thai Peranakan gastronomy. Her menu seamlessly blends the refined elegance of Royal Thai cuisine—consisting of the sophisticated, mild, and intricately presented dishes historically reserved for the Royal Palace of Siam—with the vibrant Peranakan heritage that defines the 'soul' of Phuket. Featuring the authentic 'Baba-Nyonya' style, Chef Nooror offers a complex and masterful marriage of Chinese ingredients and Malay-Thai spices. No visit is complete without sampling a heritage staple like 'Kaeng Pu Bai Chaplu' (crab curry with betel leaves) or the 'Tumee Curry,' which uses fenugreek and okra to create a flavour profile that has vanished from most modern Thai menus.
