We round up the best places to eat at this hidden gem of dining spots

Unlike its trendier neighbours like Bugis Junction or Bugis+, Fortune Centre is an oft-forgotten shopping mall and office building on Middle Road. Foodies in the know, however, know that it’s a gem of dining spots hiding in plain sight. Renowned for its plethora of vegetarian options, Fortune Centre is also home to some of the cooler openings in Singapore such as Ume San 100, a hidden umeshu bar, and Piu M, a Japanese-Italian joint that moved from Orchard Plaza. Want to know which restaurant to hit next? Read our guide to dining spots in Fortune Centre.

Boasting the largest umeshu collection in Singapore, you might find this bar difficult to locate. But make no mistake—the colourful neon umeshu vending machines on the second floor of Fortune Centre are doors leading to this hidden umeshu bar, which reveals a stylish wooden interior for you to drink in style. Order cocktails like the “P!nk”, a pretty in pink cocktail with umeshu blanc, baisu (sour plum vinegar), ground sakura, and ume salt, or choose an umeshu from its extensive menu like the rose umeshu, which is made from fully-ripe Nanko plums and organically-grown roses. Make sure to load up on food, where you can find hearty meals like “Wagyu is the New Black Chahan”, a black Wagyu fried rice that bursts with umami, to small bites like the mentaiko gyoza.

2. Piu M

Japanese-Italian favourite Piu M has made its way to Fortune Centre from Orchard Plaza, bringing with it its ethos of simple, good food to Bugis. Here, a classic bolognese is elevated with Wagyu beef and spread over rice rather than pasta, with a fried egg on the side and drizzled with cheese. The croquettes make for a wonderful small plate, with flavours such as crab meat and cream and potato and beef. If you don’t drink, this is not the place for you—every guest needs to order alcohol, but with an impressive list of Suntory whisky, shochu and beer, your boozy night out will be worth it.
