Celebrate the holiday with some of the most sought-after mooncakes this year

You mightn't believe it, but the time has come for the annual onslaught of mooncakes in Hong Kong. And while we all welcome one of the city's biggest festivals that brings us together for family reunions and feasts, it can be somewhat challenging to decide which mooncakes to try or gift. From chocolate and tea-infused egg custard mooncakes to beefy or durian variations and more, here is our pick of the best mooncakes to order this year.

Grand Hyatt

One Harbour Road at Grand Hyatt has created three new flavours this year. Priced at HK$438, the new trio of flavours are available as six mini mooncakes including egg custard with crystallised ginger which is inspired by a well-loved Chinese dessert; a tropical treat that uses dried mango from the Philippines and shredded coconut; and red date, dried tangerine peel and osmanthus which is a popular choice for health-conscious customers. Meanwhile, classic mooncakes such as white lotus seed paste with two salted egg yolks are available as a box of four in the Full Moon Box for HK$468, and six smaller mooncakes filled with melt-in-the-mouth egg custard make up the Bright Moon Box which is available at HK$418. 

Tiffin has collaborated with Phoebe’s Kitchen this year for the Wellington mooncake, available at HK$428 for two pieces, which is essentially US Angus beef fillet wrapped in a flaky pastry along with Tiffan's signature Wellington components of Parma ham, white mushrooms, foie gras and black truffle sauce.

Yong Fu

One Michelin-starred Yong Fu in Hong Kong is introducing a limited edition (there will only be a total of 1,000 boxes made) mooncake gift box for the first time in its history. Bringing over Shanghai’s love of durian mooncakes, chef Liu Zhen and his team have created two types of durian-flavoured treats, including a Musang King durian snowskin mooncake and a BlackThorn durian snowskin mooncake, made with the best of Malaysia's spiky produce. Each box is priced at HK$428 and contains six mooncakes, with three types of each flavour.

The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong’s mooncakes are always a delectable treat, and this year’s offerings are no exception. Housed in a photogenic box featuring a blue and orange design inspired by the mythical jade rabbit and elements from the West Kowloon Cultural District, the new “Joy and Abundance” set is inclusive of eight pieces of mini egg custard mooncakes, which are meticulously crafted with premium ingredients to delight your taste buds. 

The hotel’s Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant Tin Lung Heen has also launched a limited-edition set of mini egg custard mooncakes, along with selected teas to match. And if you’re looking to indulge this Mid-Autumn Festival, their deluxe bird’s nest egg custard mooncake set packaged in an exquisite gift box with LED lights, is not to be missed.

Shangri-La

To celebrate its golden anniversary, Shangri-La Group has enriched its signature 50-year-aged mandarin peel and red bean paste mooncakes with two extra flavours: rose and caramelised chestnuts. A box of nine is available at HK$888 with three of each flavour, including the original. Another option exchanges the signature flavour for mini mooncakes with egg yolk and white lotus seed paste for the same price. They are also offering Musang King durian snow skin cakes for HK$498.

Crafted by the chefs at Summer Palace, Island Shangri-La’s mooncake collection is extended by six additional hampers with delectable mooncakes and special treats. Mini custard mooncakes in a box of eight for HK$488 are blended with new intriguing flavours such as black truffle, citrus, sesame, matcha and Earl Grey. As part of Shangri-La’s dedication to giving back to society, the sale of the Heep Hong Charity Hamper, priced at HK$2,288, will be donated directly to support less fortunate children.

Kowloon Shangri-La also has new mooncakes including the Shang Palace x Hsinchu Fuyuan peanut mooncakes for HK$458 and black sesame mooncakes for HK$458, as well as Shang Palace's coconut and pandan leaf snow skin mooncakes for HK$498. One of their bestsellers, the mini matcha and hojicha mooncakes with red bean, yuzu paste and mochi for $408 are also available this year.

The Peninsula, creators of the cult favourite egg custard mooncakes, is introducing three new flavours. Taking inspiration from traditional Cantonese flavours, The Peninsula’s culinary advisor Chef Tang Chi-keung has crafted two, including a sesame and mung bean paste mooncake and a salty lemon with white lotus seed paste mooncake. The third flavour is a twist on the mini egg custard mooncake, which is infused with Blend tea for a delicate aroma. The new flavours are available in the Moon Gazing gift set, alongside an exquisite porcelain tea set and tin of Pu Er tea for HK$2,488.

The two-Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant’s executive chef Siu Hin-chi adds an extra dimension to the mini classic with the new mini egg custard with kumquat mooncake. The assorted mooncake picnic basket is available at HK$988 and comes with Reunion moonlight white tea. Chef May Chow also debuts limited edition tea-flavoured mini mooncakes, which come in a box of six for HK$628.

The St Regis Hong Kong’s one-Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant Run and chef Hung Chi-kwong bring this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival to life with a selection of limited edition mooncakes, featuring a classic flavour and two modern ones. British chocolatier Charbonnel et Walker celebrates this year’s festival of the moon with what they do best: chocolate. The customisable Mid-Autumn chocolate and mooncake collection is available at HK$528 and includes four mooncakes and a box of handmade chocolate truffles. Having opened its doors recently, The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel presents its first mooncakes to Hong Kong with a charitable element. A portion of the proceeds from mooncake sales will be donated to the local charity Mother’s Choice. The holiday selection features eight offerings including classic mooncakes such as white lotus seed paste mooncake with double egg yolks. Paying homage to Fullerton’s Singaporean origins, two mooncake gift sets feature three Southeast Asian delights: the Singaporean pineapple tarts, sambal ikan billis (chilli fried anchovies) and prawn crackers. Steak King uses a recipe by chef Brandon Tomkinson who has worked with Gordon Ramsay, another beef wellington expert, to make mini M9 Wagyu beef tenderloin wellingtons disguised as mooncakes. Inside each "mooncake" are the classic components of a wellington including tender beef, mustard, rich mushroom duxelles, and savoury crepe, all wrapped in a buttery puff pastry crust.  The gift box, priced at HK888, contains four Wagyu wellington mooncakes.
