Born out of necessity during the sugar crisis of the early 1980s, the fair has become a celebrated annual tradition that brings the best of the region to the capital
During the launch of the Negros Trade Fair at Negrense icon and celebrated chef Margarita Forés’ Grace Park, we learned that this year’s theme is “Halad” which loosely means devotion or tribute. The luncheon was a collaboration between Forés and two other Ilonggo chefs, Patrick Go and Don Colmenares, and featured dishes rich in their region’s flavours and ingredients.
Going on its 38th year, the trade fair was the initiative of a group of women (and one man) to assist the struggling sugar industry of the province during the financial crisis of the 1980s. They formalised their group and called it the Association of Negros Producers Inc., a non-stock, non-profit organisation dedicated to uplifting the local economy. The first-ever Negros Trade Fair was held in 1985 at the Makati Carpark with the support of Bea Zobel of Ayala Land and Daniel “Bitay” Lacson Jr. who facilitated the transport of goods to Manila at no cost. Although the event was not without its challenges (there was a typhoon the same time as the fair), the event was a success and laid down a foundation for what has now become a highly anticipated annual affair.

For “Halad,” they chose the slipper orchid as its symbol which they feel reflects the spirit of Negros Island— its rich culture, vibrant arts, abundant talents, and bio-diversity. Much like this orchid that deserves our efforts to preserve, so do the traditional arts and artisanal skills that form the cultural backbone of Negros Island. They are hoping that this will act as a powerful reminder of their collective responsibility to preserve their culture for generations to come.
This year’s trade fair will feature an exciting line-up of 115 booths showcasing a wide array of Negrense products that range from gifts, decors, and houseware; furniture and furnishings; food; natural and organic products; as well as fashion and garments. In addition, 28 LGUs and government agencies will be participating and will be bringing in products by the local artisans and ingredients and materials unique to their cities and municipalities. This year's fair will also showcase products that have been entered into the prestigious Bulawan Awards. The Bulawan Awards is a recognition program by the ANP that celebrates excellence in design and craftsmanship among Negrense micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
