The second season of Tatler Tours begins with visits to some of the best speakeasies on the island, including Taylor Adam, Junior the Pocket Bar and Sago House
Singapore is brimming with various bar concepts like speakeasies, or watering holes hidden in plain sight, mimicking hidden bars that arose during the Prohibition Era in the United States during the 1920s. The era saw a constitutional ban on production, importation, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages in the United States, resulting in illegal manufacturing and sale of liquor as well as the rise of speakeasies.
Unlike conventional bars with flashy signs and crowded entrances, speakeasies embrace secrecy with discreet entrances, hiding behind unassuming facades. The air of exclusivity adds to their allure, inviting imbibers to uncover its charm.

In a bid to discover the city’s top speakeasies, Tatler’s branded content editor Adriel Chiun and lifestyle editor Coco Marett took it upon themselves to explore some of the hidden cocktail bars around the island.
Taylor Adam

Above Taylor Adam
First up, the duo took a trip to Taylor Adam, a cocktail bar hidden behind a bespoke tailor in the heart of the Central Business District (CBD). Here, the duo imbibed on two signature cocktails, Carpe Diem and LSD. Translated to mean ‘seize the day’, the former is a strong and refreshing whisky-based cocktail perfect for spice lovers. The latter is a gin-based concoction inspired by hit song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by English rock band, The Beatles.

At Junior the Pocket Bar, the duo were welcomed by bar’s discotheque-inspired concept. They were joined by Hazel Long, who helms the bar and served up two modern-classic cocktails inspired by its disco theme. First up is Pomme, a tarte apple calvados tonic highball, followed by Ouzo, a memorable cocktail with summery and citrus-y flavours.

The speakeasy hunt ended at Sago House, where co-founder and mixologist Jay Gray whipped up two drinks from its extensive menu. At this cocktail bar, the menu is constantly changing, with new cocktails curated by the team each week. “This challenges us to create new drinks, without getting too comfortable with a certain style,” shared Gray. Here, the duo tried the Naked & Famous, a bitter and smoky daisy cocktail, and the Hanky Hopper, the bar’s interpretation of a dessert-style old-fashioned.
