The party-dining destination combines funky wines with progressive Euro-centric plates in an eye-catching space
Vibe dining has officially taken over Singapore. Like all things new and natural, Big Wine Freaks lives up to its namesake, setting out to put the fun in funk.
Occupying a heritage building in trendy Bukit Pasoh, the city’s freshest champagne and wine bar bears a contemporary look and feel, accompanied by a thumping mix of groovy acoustics. Taking open-concept quite literally, the boundaries between the kitchen and the dining spaces dissolve, inviting guests to be a part of the boozy theatre.

The unconventional design doesn’t stop there. Think smooth metal countertops juxtaposed by maroon-hued velvet highchairs zig-zagging strategically across the dining hall, while a contrast of tiered seatings alludes to an intimate amphitheatre. The varied lighting elements, from the striking linear pink lights to the whimsical projections, illuminate the room in a mysterious and hedonic fashion. Even the upholstery from Dedar Milano—known for their exceptional craftsmanship and association with luxury brand Hermès—adds to the visual richness.

While the eye-catching display of original pieces made by Nason Moretti—a prestigious Italian glass maker—may turn heads, enjoying a sip from finely crafted glassware such as Zalto, Kimura and Sydonios is an experience that we won’t take lightly either. In that glass of yours, you may cherry-pick from over 2000 bottles and 500 labels—each carefully sourced from micro-farms dedicated to organic and sustainable practices—to fill. From revered terroirs of Champagne and Burgundy to the undiscovered gems of Jura, Beaujolais, and Loire, the wine list excites and excels when spotlighting a new generation of winemakers.

Our picks? Start with elegant grower champagne Frederic Savart L'Ouverture premier cru. The fizzy number offers a captivating bouquet of white flowers and juicy peaches while remaining pristinely balanced. The astonishing Domaine de la Cras Bourgogne by young and gifted vigneron Marc Soyard is also a treat. While the 2020 may be a tad early to drink, this 100 per cent pinot noir is still lively on the palate, redolent of dark cherries, and beautifully complex with minerality and spice.

As for what goes onto the eccentric dinnerware, which arrives in total maximalist fashion thanks to famed fashion designer Alessandro Michele’s vision for Florentine-based ceramist Ginori 1735, one can expect European tapas interpreted with Japanese sensibilities. Think lightly cured seafood, meats and seasonal vegetables flame kissed over the open-fire grill, and dainty desserts to finish.
