The new restaurant is under F&B brand The Yen Group that brought us Michelin Plate Yen Yakiniku

Now that dining out in groups of five is allowed, it is the best time to have a delicious yakiniku meal with friends. This is quite timely given that F&B brand The Yen Group, which brought us Michelin Plate restaurant Yen Yakiniku, has recently opened sister concept Yen Social at Duo Galleria.

The new restaurant is branded as the more casual sibling of Yen Yakiniku, and it is reflected in the lively and stylish space fitted with a counter table for a full view of the chefs at work. Bigger groups may opt for the tables surrounded by screen dividers to give diners some privacy.

Yen Social is a yakiniku restaurant after all, and Taiwanese head chef and co-owner Jones Chen (who has been with the group since it opened in 2015) has curated a menu where various cuts are sourced from all over the world—Japan, Australia and the US, among others.

Options range from the popular Japanese Wagyu striploin steak, dry-aged Wagyu Tomahawk to the more exclusive items such as 21 days dry-aged Wagyu ox tongue and whisky dry-aged Wagyu ribeye. The latter is extra special as Chen has discovered the perfect whisky that would “enhance the rich taste of the meat” after many months of experimentation. He marinates the beef for five days in Kavalan Vinho Barrique Cask Strength single malt whisky from Taiwan to infuse the flavours of the malt and cask.

The dining concept is casual too, and Chen “want guests to relish the joy of grilling thinly sliced cuts themselves and enjoy having chefs grill the thicker and more difficult-to-grill cuts like the ribeye steak for them”. You may opt for the Yen Social Butcher Platters comprising must-try cuts such as thick-cut karubi, chuck eye roll, chuck short ribs and Australian Wagyu ribeye. To complement the meal, the restaurant offers a sake flight as well as non-grilled dishes including Farmer’s Salad and Yukke. The former is an ideal starter which consists of mixed greens, watermelon cubes and a light yuzu dressing to whet the appetite, while Yukke is the chef’s signature Wagyu beef tartare enriched with raw egg yolk and house-made barbecue sauce.

Chen offers also you a taste of his home with the Wagyu beef noodle. Adding variety to the menu, this is essentially a richly soup simmered with soy sauce, garlic and spiced and tossed with noodles, Wagyu beef chunks and beef tendons.
