Sweeten your National Doughnut Day festivities on June 2 with these decadent creations, comprising novel and classic flavours

The first Friday of June is National Doughnut Day, but you shouldn’t have to wait till June 2 this year to satisfy your cravings for irresistible doughnuts. No one quite knows when this quintessential bakery confection was invented, but one thing’s for sure: we can’t get enough of sweet, deep-fried dough, be it stuffed with cream, sprinkled with rainbow sprinkles, or simply glazed with sugar.

By far the most exciting development in the doughnut scene this year is the opening of Mister Donut, the beloved American chain that gained cult status in Japan. It’s renowned for its signature Pon de Ring doughnut, an offering that’s both crispy and chewy with a texture resembling a Japanese mochi. Coming in a range of different flavours, these doughnuts promise to delight with vivid colours and sweeter flavours. Craving other quality doughnuts in the meantime? Here’s our guide to the best doughnuts you can buy in Singapore.

Don't miss: Where to Indulge in the Best Burnt Cheesecake

1. Mister Donut

Junction 8 is getting a sweet treat this year. Come May 21, American doughnut chain Mister Donut will be opening its flagship store at the Bishan mall with popular offerings that have endeared it to doughnut-lovers worldwide, especially in Japan. Most famous of all will be the Pon de Ring doughnuts, which features eight mochi balls encased within dough, then deep-fried. Here in Singapore, you’ll be treated to two exclusive Pon de Ring flavours you won’t find anywhere else: strawberry chocolate, and chocolate.

Most of Mister Donut’s offerings are made with baking powder, like the Angel French Cruller. Since the doughnut mixture is more like cake batter than dough, the braided confection is moist, cake-like, and intensely addictive. But if you’re a yeasted doughnut traditionalist, go for the yeast doughnuts instead, which carry a lighter, more complex flavour that’s still beautifully saccharine with the choice of two flavours: sugar raised, and honey dip.

2. Burnt Ends Bakery

The steakhouse launched its bakery arm last year, expanding its offerings from grilled steaks to decadent sweets including doughnuts. There’s a variety of flavours to choose from, but we always go for the Milo Dinosaur, created for the Singapore Food Festival 2020 but is still available today. It’s a creative spin on the classic drink where the soft brioche buns are packed with Milo cream and Milo biscuit and coated in Milo powder for good measure. Each box with six or 12 pieces.

3. Nassim Hill Bakery

Nothing beats house-made bakes and this bakery’s brioche doughnuts are prepared fresh every day with premium ingredients. Choose the box of four, which comes with delectable kaya and chocolate cream fillings; these are, of course, made from scratch.

4. Fluff Bakery

In need of halal options? Look no further than halal artisanal bakery serving up an array of doughnuts. Hot on our list is the strawberry cream pie doughnut, filled with a fruity strawberry puree and vanilla custard, and finished with a generous sprinkle of milk crumbs.

5. Doughnut Shack

There’s no need to wrack your brains in deciding which doughnuts to choose when you can opt for the pastry shop’s assorted box, which comes with a variety of flavours. For the ultimate indulgence, make sure you include Donutella which comes with Nutella filling, salted caramel, or peanut butter jam.

7. Sourbombe Artisanal Bakery

If you can’t get enough of the sourdough trend, head down to Sourbombe Artisanal Bakery, where you’ll find exciting hybrids of sourdough and the Italian bomboloni, which are doughnuts stuffed with pastry cream. The root of every doughnut on sale here is a sourdough starter, which is added to dough to leaven for 18 to 24 hours before it is deep-fried in coconut oil. The result is a doughnut with an exquisite tang and a complementary nutty aroma from the coconut oil, pairing perfectly with flavours like blueberry and lemon thyme or Basque burnt cheesecake.

8. Coach Café

The Coach Play Singapore Shophouse opened on April 5, 2023 to much fanfare, and it’s no surprise that the Coach Café inside it has received the same amount of love. Here, you’ll find wonderfully soft donuts filled with either raspberry cream or lemon curd, then rolled generously in sugar for an insatiable crunch. It’s the perfect treat after searching for the perfect Tabby bag or personalising a vintage bag to your eclectic personality.

9. Haritts

Haritts should be a familiar name to doughnut-lovers in Singapore. The Japanese brand is renowned for its light and pillowy texture with simple yet delightful flavours, keeping customers coming back for more. Pistachio is a popular flavour, as is the tangier limone, but keep your eyes peeled for exclusive flavour drops like the sakura strawberry donut, which has been in popular demand this spring.

10. Krispy Kreme

Even to the uninitiated, Krispy Kreme is one doughnut chain that has climbed its way to the top for good reason. Its leavened by yeast, which makes it lighter, fluffier, and pillowy—the perfect base for its decadent flavours. You can’t go wrong with the original glazed doughnut, but a white chocolate doughnut filled with custard and topped with Kitkat is a perfect offering as well.

11. The Fat Kid Bakery

Self-taught baker Ariel Tang started the Fat Kid Bakery in 2020, and in just three years she has made a name for herself as one of Singapore’s top purveyors of the deep-fried treat. Among the favourites of her bakery is the roasted hazelnut bomboloni, which delivers a beautiful caramel-like nuttiness, or the Citrust Bomb, a bomboloni stuffed with a powerful lemon curd. If you’re feeling more peckish, however, opt for the savoury bombolonis instead, which comes in flavours like torched mentaiko cream, sour cream and onion, and roasted garlic mascarpone.
