The casual and cosy eatery in the city is home to some of the legendary and beloved stalls in the hawker scene
It’s easy to find a wide variety of authentic hawker food in Singapore, but it can get a little challenging when you’re shopping along the Orchard Road belt and well, food courts just don’t cut it.
However, there is a brand new option for those who love their local cuisine. Just head over to Ion Orchard where you’ll find the newly opened Hawkers’ Street at basement four, a casual and cosy eatery that is home to six famed hawker stalls.
Bring an appetite so you can enjoy as many dishes as you can, starting with Nam Sing Hokkien Mee, an extremely popular stall at Old Airport Road Food Centre which boasts perpetual long queues (pre-Covid 19). It’s not surprising though as food lovers can’t get enough of its signature Hokkien mee, a mix of thin bee hoon and classic yellow noodles drenched in a flavourful stock made with seafood and other ingredients.

There’s also Famous Eunos Bak Chor Mee, a family-run chain that still prepares minced meat noodle using a 100-year-old recipe concocted by its founder, Chen Lian Fu. It caters to the taste of Singaporeans, with the springy mee kia soaked in an umami-packed broth and tossed with handmade pork dumplings, pork lard, fried garlic, vinegar and chilli.
More of a rice person? It’s not a problem as you’ll also find Beach Road Scissors-Cut Curry Rice. The legendary Hainanese curry rice stall in Jalan Besar is famed for its braised pork belly and crispy pork chop; the ingredients are cut up using scissors (hence, the dish name) and served atop steamed rice enriched with curry gravy and braised pork sauce, as well as sides of fried egg and cabbage.
