Welcome to Foodie Finds! This is an article series by Tatler, chronicling where and what to order according to the food-obsessed.

I myself have never understood non-foodies. How can one not love flavours, spices, aromas and all the cultural nuances and memories that come with every bite? Dining is an experience meant to be savoured and is even more fun when shared with loved ones. Dining around a table means sharing, conversing, bonding and learning. A dish can tell you so much about a person, a culture, and a country. It speaks volumes of a nation’s history and is an art form on its own. Skilled hands are trained over years or are born out of pure passion and practice. Professional chefs and home cooks alike, from young stars to grandmothers, have been cooking up meals filled with emotion and have truly made us foodies, happy.

Through Foodie Finds, we ask our epicurean friends to share their favourites. In this feature, we tackle takeout and delivery. Hear what Elbert Cuenca, the restaurateur behind brands like Elbert's Steak Room, Elbert's Pizzeria, Elbert's Upstairs Bar, Elbert's Diner and Metronome, has to say. He shares his go-to shops for takeout here:

"Before we get started, It’s important to note that as a restaurateur, I would much rather eat at a restaurant than order takeout. When customers ask why I don’t branch of one of my restaurants to a location near them, I often joke with the phrase ‘if the mountain will not come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the mountain.’ However, there are times we can’t help but eat at home and so we must order takeout or delivery. The challenge then is to find food that travels well so that it’s like it just came from the kitchen," shares Cuenca.

1. Mantra Indian Kitchen & Bar

@mantrabistroph

To begin with, this is my favourite Indian restaurant at the moment. Metronome’s neighbour restaurant hosts a range of northern Indian cuisine. While curries would seem to be the food that travels best, even their tandoori and biryanis arrive piping hot. It’s only their naan that I have to reheat in a toaster oven. The staff are very friendly, responsive and systemic in the way they handle my orders. My top dish here is the chicken makhani and shrimp curry.

2. Lagrima Bodega

@lagrimanila

I love tacos. Lagrima is one of my favourites, but the pandemic relegated it into a kitchen operation (hence, the Bodega moniker).  However, they have a good online ordering system and they offer taco kits that require only the tortilla to be toasted on a pan, the rest is simple assembly. My go-to here is their six taco kit with an extra order of three tortillas (tip: their “feelings” are generous enough to fill 9 tacos). I usually order the chicharones and kimchi asada.

3. Ramen Keisuke

@ramenkeisukeph

Who doesn’t love a piping hot bowl of ramen on a rainy day after a rough night of drinking?

Personally, I find ramen to be one dish that becomes quite compromised when eaten outside of a ramen-ya, and I also find ramen kits too cumbersome.

However, Ramen Keisuke’s take-out comes in two parts only—the soup and the noodles with the toppings. All one has to do is boil the rich and creamy chicken broth, and then combine the two in a bowl. It’s about 90 per cent the quality of what you would have in-store, but that’s just fine because their tori king black spicy ramen is outstanding to begin with.

4. The Thai Plate

This is an unassuming operation run by a very simple Thai family in the fringes of Makati. Their dishes take me back to the streets of Bangkok, and I can best describe it as honest and sincere, right down to the pricing. I also love how the staff are so easy and pleasant to deal with, even if it’s merely through a messaging app.

I usually ask what their dish of the day is, then I go with that, because everything I’ve tried there is excellent. My most recent order was their fried pork holy basil with century egg.

5. Army Navy and Shakey’s

@armynavyburgerburrito

Okay, I have to throw this into my list because it’s usually fried chicken that I crave for at home.

Army Navy’s Fearless Fried chicken and Shakey’s Chicken ’n Mojos top my list. It helps a great deal that both these chain restaurants have branches located very close to where I live, so the chicken always arrives freshly cooked. A big plus is their customer service in which their riders handle delivery customers no different from dine-in patrons.

6. Pia’s Kitchen

@pias.kitchen

What started as a housewife’s pandemic home kitchen project is now one of the best artisan confectioneries in town. Each chocolate is hand-made with top-shelf and fine ingredients before being beautifully packaged. Their Rocky Road may be their most popular offering, but it’s the hazelnut bar that I am drawn to most.
