The older we get, the more important it is for us to enjoy ourselves! The best way to do so? By travelling, of course!

If there's one thing we miss amid the current pandemic, it's travelling! The buzz of an airport, the excitement of a new destination: these are things everyone should take joy in, especially if you're a senior.

While travelling may often be thought of as an activity best suited for the young, seniors are just as deserving of a fun, relaxing experience abroad or at home. Today, Tatler Philippines lists some of the best destinations for seniors looking to experience something new!

1. Strasbourg, France

Paris has often been thought of as the ultimate French destination. While this may be true for some, others actually enjoy the country's provincial idylls much, much more. A popular spot in the Alsace region, Strasbourg is a modern-day French city that comes without the stressful hustle and bustle that Paris is known for. In Strasbourg, parks are aplenty, and street musicians dot the corners of wide-open plazas.

Seniors may find the local trams much easier to navigate than the métro. There are fantastic bazaars and farmer's markets every weekend, vendors selling fresh rhubarb and strawberries alongside cheese and olives. It's also convenient to travel to other quaint French towns from Strasbourg; weekends can often be spent in picturesque Colmar or quaint Riquewihr.

2. Honolulu, Hawaii

Nothing beats lazing away on the beachside. Seniors looking to do so may find respite on the sunny shores of Honolulu, Hawaii. There's a laidback vibe around the shores of Waikiki where elderly audiences can dip their toes in this world-famous beach. Around the area is a slew of five-star hotels and restaurants that serve tantalising breakfast dishes alongside amazing seafood.

Honolulu is a particularly great option for seniors who love nature. There are easy hiking trails all around the island, amazing beaches in Waikiki and at North Shore, plus the lovely DOLE plantation, which is a popular family attraction.

3. Hoi An, Vietnam

Another beach town, but this time in Vietnam! Hoi An is an idyllic seaside locale that boasts of delicious cuisine, fine shorelines, and plenty of cultures. Though there are no direct flights to Hoi An, seniors may fly to Danang in central Vietnam and take a 30-minute car ride to Hoi An. There is plenty of bed and breakfasts within the area, most with pools for those looking to relax. Because the town itself is so small, nearly everything is within walking distance, but of course, there are taxis and bike rentals (often free) to take you around.

The Old Town is a popular, and very walkable district in Hoi An that features traditional buildings, temples, and cafés with amazing Vietnamese coffee. Spend a day at An Bang beach or Cua Dai beach, or simply stroll around in search of the perfect street-side bánh mì

4. Tainan, Taiwan

Since it's lifted its VISA restriction for Filipinos, Taiwan has become a popular destination for those looking for a quick getaway. Though Taipei is usually the centre of all the hubbub, we recommend a more tranquil vacation spot at Tainan. Currently, there is no MRT in Tainan (it's still currently under construction), however, there are plenty of bus routes, two of which are specifically designed for tourists.

Those looking for peaceful vistas can head to the Confucian Temple, which is among the oldest of its kind in the entire country. There, tourists can marvel at the traditional architecture, ornate statuary, and park of graceful banyan trees. If you miss the nightlife, then consider going to the Tainan City Flower Night Market, where a variety of merchandise and food are sold on certain nights of the week. Lastly, visit the Anping Tree House, a treasured historical building that has found itself fused with trees.

5. Anchorage, Alaska

As you age, you start to realise the importance of truly appreciating nature's wonders while you can. Alaska is one such wonder that no one should miss out on. It's a whole new world in that state, with huge glaciers, whales, grizzly bears, and even glimpses of the famed Northern lights. There are plenty of awe-inspiring panoramas as well that include land and seascapes.

Those looking to take it easy can opt to book a cruise, while more adventurous people can try helicopter rides or train adventures!
