A look back at some Tokyo 2020 Paralympics highlights which did Malaysia proud

Malaysia’s para-athletes put on a splendid show at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, which took place from August 24 to September 5. A total of 22 athletes with a range of disabilities carried the Malaysian campaign in nine sports: archery, badminton, boccia, cycling, para-athletics, powerlifting, swimming, table tennis, and wheelchair tennis.

In July, former Youth and Sports Minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican had set a three-gold target, which equals the medal haul at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, for the Malaysian contingent at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Not only was this target met, but Malaysia also exceeded its total medal haul at the Paralympics since the country’s first participation in 1972.

Here are all the medals the Malaysian para-athletes have won at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics:

Bonnie Bunyau Gustin (Gold)

Sarawak-born powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, who was one of the Malaysian flag bearers for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics opening ceremony, delivered Malaysia’s first gold when he won the men's 72kg competition. The 22-year-old also set a new Paralympics record with 228kg (deadlift), a feat previously held by Iran’s Rasool Mohsin by 1kg.

"Selamat Hari Merdeka to everyone in Malaysia. I dedicate this title to Malaysia... this gold is for you," he said in a virtual press conference shortly after his competition. Earlier this year, Bonnie set a new world record of 230kg in the men's 72kg event at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai.

Jong Yee Khie (Silver)

Jong Yee Khie powered his way through to a silver medal in the men’s 107kg category. Despite being unsuccessful in his first attempt to lift 230kg, the 32-year-old’s second attempt was good enough to place him second behind Mongolia’s Sodnompiljee Enkhbayar.

Jong’s podium position at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics marked a great comeback from his debut at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, where he finished seventh in the 97kg category. The tearful para-athlete said after the podium ceremony: “If the Paralympic Games were not cancelled because of Covid-19 last year, my mother would have seen my success, but what to do, she had to go first. While on the podium, my little heart told my mother that I had won the silver medal, I hope she heard it and is proud of me from up there.”

Chew Wei Lun (Silver)

Boccia player Chew Wei Lun made history when he became the first athlete to win a medal in boccia, a sport that resembles lawn bowls, at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. The 26-year-old’s silver medal also cemented boccia as the fifth sport after archery, athletics, powerlifting, and weightlifting to have ever contributed a medal for the Malaysian contingent at the Paralympic Games.

While the win was unexpected, Chew was happy to be able to promote the sport to Malaysians. “Finally, many people have started to know boccia and it is hoped that more individuals will represent the country in the future. This medal is for my team and boccia sport,” he told reporters after the medal presentation ceremony.

Cheah Liek Hou (Gold)

Cheah Liek Hou became the first player ever to win a Paralympic gold when he devastated world number one, Indonesia’s Dheva Anrimusthi, in straight games in the men’s singles category as badminton made its Paralympics debut at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. The 33-year-old smashed his way to glory as he crushed his opponent 21-17, 21-15 in the final.

Cheah, who's an 11-time winner (both singles and doubles events) of the Para-Badminton World Championships and a six-time world champion, had initially wanted to quit badminton when he realised that it wouldn't be contested at the Paralympics, but his perseverance paid off handsomely. In fact, Cheah's historic victory left him sleepless and all for the best reasons. “Glad to know so many were supportive of me, I hope this is a brand new start for me. The medal is dedicated to all Malaysians, thank you,” he said.

Abdul Latif Romly (Gold)

Barely 24 hours before the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics officially came to a close, Abdul Latif Romly made a giant leap, despite sustaining an injury, to defend his gold medal in the men’s long jump T20 (learning disabilities) event. The 24-year-old currently holds the world record of 7.64m (2018 Asian Para Games) and the Paralympics record of 7.60m (2016 Rio Paralympic Games).

The final medal made Abdul Latif the first Malaysian to retain his Paralympic title and helped the national para-athletes meet the three-gold target set for them. “I wanted badly to make sure Malaysia did not miss out on the three-gold target and also wanted to prove that I’m still the best in the world after my defeat (at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships) in Dubai,” he said.
