Pi Jiapeng and Pansuk Siriwipa were on the run for over three weeks and were suspected to be hiding in Thailand

Social media has been abuzz lately after a Singapore couple went missing while being investigated for allegedly not delivering luxury goods that were worth at least SG$32 million to their customers.

Singaporean Pi Jiapeng, 26, and Thai national Pansuk Siriwipa, 27, owned the companies, Tradenation and Tradeluxury, and allegedly accepted advance payments for luxury watches or luxury bags and then failed to deliver the items.

At least 180 reports have been lodged since June against them, according to the police on July 19.

Curious (or even bewildered) about how the couple managed to carry out this scheme and even fled the country? We detail everything you need to know about the scam below.

1. How did the scam start?

The entire story behind Pi and Pansuk began in 2019 when the couple met on the dating app, Tinder. Things began to move fast and within a week, Pansuk allegedly began paying off Pi’s gambling debts.

Towards the end of 2020, they moved into a condominium in Bukit Timah with Pi’s mother and they got married shortly after.

In April 2021, the pair decided to start their companies, Tradenation and Tradeluxury, to trade in luxury goods. The companies did well enough for the pair to be able to move into a landed property near Holland Grove by October 2021.

Tradenation, in particular, was being promoted by Instagram influencers and had many reviews on Carousell as well as a physical store, according to buyers.

In April 2022, Tradenation was registered with the Ministry of Law as a precious stones and precious metals dealer as there was no suspicious activity as yet.

2. When did things start going wrong?

Things started to go south in June when customers started noticing that there were significant delays when it came to receiving the items they paid for and some of them began to confront the couple. In an attempt to address the delays, Pi and his wife set up a Telegram chat for customers.

However, over 180 reports had been made by that point claiming that luxury items worth over SG$32 million were not delivered as promised even though money was paid.

On June 27, Pi was arrested as a result of these delays and had his passport impounded while Pansuk was called up for police investigations.

The next day, Pi was released on bail and shortly after, Pansuk’s passport was also impounded.

However, that was the last anyone heard from the couple and they reportedly fled Singapore on July 4.

3. How did they escape unnoticed?

The couple fled Singapore by hiding in the container compartment of a lorry that was driven by Mohamed Alias.

Mohamed Alias was charged with helping a Singaporean man leave the country by allowing him to hide in the container compartment of a Malaysia-registered lorry on July 22.

He was later also charged with helping Pansuk to escape in the same way.

4. What is happening now?

On July 20, The Singapore Police Force (SPF) released the names of the couple and confirmed that arrest warrants and Interpol red notices had been issued against Pi and Pansuk.

These notices allow the police to alert their counterparts in other countries of potential threats, as well as request information and ask for assistance in solving crimes. A red notice, in particular, is an international wanted person notice that alerts police worldwide about fugitives.

SPF also said that it is working with foreign law enforcement agencies to trace the couple and the criminal proceeds. Enhanced checks are also underway for vehicles leaving and entering Singapore.

Tradenation’s registration has also since been suspended by the Law Ministry.
