From forest bathing to participating in clean-ups, here's how you can make your mark this Earth Day

It’s no secret that the world is massively making moves to curb pollution, eat more sustainably and cut down on our food and material waste. After all, we are increasingly aware that we need to work much harder if we want to save our planet for our future generations.

This is likely why this year’s Earth Day theme focuses on investing in our planet and making it a place where we will be able to live comfortably even many years from now.

Earth Day falls on April 22 this year and is a time for many to consider their choices and habits and to see how we can do better for the future of our environment.

If you are looking for ways to celebrate Earth Day while educating yourself and your family about the need to be conscious, here are some ideas.

1. Do a Clean-Up

Did you know that in Singapore, each person generates about 800mg of trash each day? That said, change starts with small steps so this weekend, why not celebrate Earth Day by going out and participating in a clean-up?

You can join fellow environmentalists at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park where you will be provided with a pail and metal tongs to help clean up the park and restore the home of the (infamous) Bishan otters. You can even bring your family along and make it a special day out.

2. Register your child for an Earth Day Camp

If you want to teach your child more about how we can love and care for our Earth, one way is to register them for a special Earth Day camp with Mindful Space.

Over three hours, kids will be able to decorate their own tote bags, have a treasure hunt in the garden, play games with recycled materials and conduct science experiments all in the name of teaching them about sustainability.

3. Enjoy the sunrise with Secret Sunrise

Part of loving the Earth involves garnering an appreciation for it and that’s what Secret Sunrise aims to do. This Earth weekend, why not get up early and enjoy the sunrise with the group.

This unique event combines the connection of the body, the energy of a fitness class and the fun of dance through wireless headphones all while you watch the sunrise at East Coast Park.

4. Enjoy a Forest Bathing experiance

If you’ve never had a nature and forest bathing experience, you’re in for a treat because Xiu Nature Connections will be holding a two hour Forest Bathing experience at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

You will be guided by a certified forest therapy guide and be encouraged to focus on sensory connections as you wander the garden and create art using natural inks from flower teas.

5. Have a meal at a sustainable restaurant

One of the best things we can do to combat overfishing and reduce pollution is to simply stop eating meat and seafood. This Earth Month, many restaurants have recognised that diners want more plant-based options and have joined the movement to create more of these dishes to give diners variety.

From restaurants that grow their own herbs and vegetables in farm-to-table concepts to ones that put a spotlight on meatless and sustainably sourced meats, there is something for everyone.
