Korean popular music has proven its dominance in the music scene for countless years to date. K-Pop is widely known for its artists’ striking choreography and strong vocals on top of the amazing visuals; and we have BTS, Blackpink, Exo, Twice, Red Velvet, and Got7 as proof. But to talk about self-produced K-Pop legacy—is to talk about Seventeen. Seventeen first made its public appearance doing different promotions and live broadcasts last 2013 as part of a pre-debut system. The huge idol group then made its debut in 2015 with their album 17 CARAT and from there, the rest is history. These super rookies in the Korean music industry are now international sensations consisting of 13 stars, all of which sparkle in their performances.

Otherwise called SVT, is formed by Pledis Entertainment with artists S.Coups, Wonmoo, Mingyu, Vernon, Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK, SeungKwan, Hoshi, Jun, The8 and Dino. The dashing looks and soulful talent of these men earned them a place on music charts, and inevitably their fanbase’s diamond hearts.

Moving on to the ultimate stan test! Below are more details about Seventeen for the unfamiliar, and a call for Carats to see if they are worthy of the fandom title.

What's in a name?

Seventeen seems a mismatch in number when the group only has 13 members. But this is because SVT is made up of three sub-groups: Hip-Hop, Vocal and Performance. When you add the sum of both, it equals 16 and considering their whole group as one completes the equation. The Hip-Hop team is led by S.Coups with Wonwoo, Mingyu and Vernon, the Vocal headed by Woozi with Jeonghan, Joshua, DK and SeungKwan, and the Performance by Hoshi with Jun, The8 and Dino.

Who are the foreign four?

There are four members in Seventeen who are not from South Korea, with the first two from China and the other from the USA. Though their features are similar to natives, Jun is from Shenzhen and The8 is from Liaoning for the former while Vernon’s birthplace is New York and Joshua came from Los Angeles.

How can you best identify a Carat?

It’s not a surprise for fans to show their dedication and support towards their idols in their own special way. As unique as the fan title for SVT fans is, the Carats have reciprocated the energy through an official lightstick dubbed as the carat bong paired with rose quartz and serenity as official colours. The fan club went to great lengths as much as the group themselves intently placed deep thought into making them feel special, comparing them to precious diamonds.

Where does their inspiration come from?

Albeit a common initial answer for the majority, Seventeen takes pride in voicing out their parents as their biggest influence. On behalf of the group, Mingyu declared that they are all thankful for their parents who helped bring them together as a group. Their role model, it is a boy band launched in 1998 named Shinhwa.

When getting ready for the day...

13 is undeniably a large number. In order to efficiently maximize time and resources, three to four members utilise one bathroom at a time, and they all use a single bottle of shampoo. And when travelling, two cars are used. It looks like a difficult situation, but the group nevertheless seems to be always having a great time together—cooking ramyeon within their dorm on the face of their clock which has a picture of Levi Ackerman from the Attack on Titan anime.

Why is Seventeen a distinct K-Pop group?

SVT composes and produces its own songs, making the group put a lot of extra effort into their craft every single day. Woozi revealed that what they do requires above-the-average hard work compared to normal jobs. And prior to their debut, they spent almost 18 hours in the practice room just to execute a breathtaking “young energy” performance, which is their music genre.
