根據了解，小室圭目前是持美國給留學生的OPT（Optional Practical Training）簽證合法居留，而真子使用的則是配偶簽證，不過相關簽證預計在5月失效，因此現在夫妻倆正在想辦法處理美國簽證。而根據日本媒體報導，小室圭正考慮改為申請E-2條約投資人簽證，來繼續留在美國。
註釋：「E-2條約投資人簽證」是一種非移民簽證，允許外國公民在美國開展業務並為該業務工作，主要發給在美創立或購買公司的投資人，相關簽證的有效期限最長可達5年，不過只要E2公司繼續運營並滿足所有E2簽證要求，它就可以無限制地一次又一次地續簽。

若想要申請E-2條約投資人簽證，最重要的莫過於事業計畫以及資金，所以根據日本媒體報導，這次小室圭申請簽證的資金來源即是妻子真子的30年存款，由於過去真子尚未脫離皇室前，她成年前每年可領到305萬圓（約新台幣76萬元），成年後每年則可以領為915萬圓（約新台幣228萬元）的皇族費，而且不需要課稅。此外她也曾在博物館工作，估計私人財產破億元。
