Save the date, darlings: Disney's Cruella premieres exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar this September

Disappointed that you couldn't watch Cruella on the big screen when it premiered in theatres earlier this year? Fret not, for fans of the highly anticipated live-action prequel will finally be able to see it in Malaysia exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar when it premieres on the streaming platform on September 3.

From her show-stopping fashion to a tragic backstory that will change the way you see one of Disney's most iconic villains, Academy Award-winner Emma Stone's deliciously wicked portrayal of Cruella may have you rooting for the bad guy, or in this case, girl.

Here are three things we love about Disney's Cruella.

Unlike her animated counterpart from the 1961 Disney film 101 Dalmatians (also on Disney+ Hotstar), Stone's Cruella de Vil is less fur-obsessed and driven more by revenge—a trait that will indeed help us see past her cruel penchant for animal-skinning, and into the mind of a woman who will stop at nothing to achieve what she wants.

Fun fact: the original Cruella de Vil of British writer Dodie Smith's 1956 children's book 101 Dalmatians was married to a wealthy furrier and portrayed more as an opportunistic socialite and heiress than a maniacal villain.

Though adding her own unmistakable brand of bonkers to the show, Stone took enormous inspiration from the animated film version and from actress Glenn Close's portrayal in the 1996's live-action Dalmatians.

From Cruella's garish make-up and over-the-top fashion choices to her frightful driving skills, several similarities can be seen between past and present incarnations of her character, though some critics have agreed that Stone's Cruella is the most sympathetic and twistedly relatable yet.

A touch of twisted nostalgia

Set in 1970s punk rock London, Cruella boasts a unique aesthetic that sets the scene beautifully for the drama unfolding between the career-driven Cruella – then named Estella—and the posh and wicked Baroness von Hellman for whom she works, played by Oscar winner Emma Thompson. As vile as Cruella is, the baroness is utterly loathsome and one can't help but side with Cruella in her crazy quest for revenge.
